Die Juwelen von Marie Amélie d’Orléans (1865–1951), Königin von Portugal. Prinzessin Amélie wurde am 28. September 1865 in Twickenham England, als Tochter von Louis Philippe Albert d'Orléans, Comte de Paris und Maria Isabel von Orléans-Montpensier geboren.
Ihre Ur-Großeltern waren der letzte König von Frankreich, Louis-Philippe und Königin Maria Amalia. Im Jahr 1886 heiratete sie den portugiesischen Thronfolger Karl.

Als dieser 1889 als Karl I. den portugiesischen Thron bestieg, wurde sie die letzte Königin von Portugal. Neben den Kronjuwelen von Portugal, die ihr erst nach der Thronbesteigung ihres Mannes zur Verfügung standen, hatte sie zuvor nur Zugriff auf ihre persönliche Kollektion, die sie zur Hochzeit geschenkt bekommen hat. Ihr zukünftiger Gemahl Karl schenkte ihr ein Diamantdiadem, das auch als Collier verwandelbar ist und heute noch in der Familie Braganza getragen wird. Außerdem ein hochmodisches, asymetrisches Collier mit Saphiren und ein emailliertes, diamantbesetztes Opernglas mit ihren Initialien und einer Krone.
Beide Stücke im Stil des französischen Juweliers Boucheron und wahrscheinlich dort erworben.

Aus Portugal kam eine große, 13cm lange portugiesische Brosche im Stil einer Aigrette des 18. Jahrhunderts mit angehängten Tropfenperlen, des 1888 zum portugiesischen Hofjuwelier ernannten Hauses Leitao e Irmao.

Ebenfalls aus Portugal könnte eine Anhängerbrosche mit einem großen Smaragd-Cabochon von 32 Karat und einem angehängten Smaragd-Pampel von 23 Karat und Diamanten von zusammen ca. 6 Karat gekommen sein.

Ein Armreif mit einem Smaragd-Cabochon von 30 Karat und Diamanten von zusammen ca. 12 Karat wird wohl auch ein Geschenk gewesen sein.

Am häufigsten und schon in ihrer Zeit als Kronprinzessin ist sie mit einer Smaragd-Garnitur von dem Pariser Juwelier Bapst abgebildet worden, die nach Vever bereits 1872 entstanden sein soll und demnach ein Geschenk ihrer Mutter gewesen sein könnte, die sie zuvor besaß.
Die Parure im extravagenten Stil der "Dritten Republik", besteht aus einem Diamantdiadem mit sieben großen Smaragden, die mit markanten, pfeilartigen Spitzen abwechseln und von aufragenden Diamantreihen getrennt sind. Alles ist auf einer Basis mit Diamanten und kleinen Smaragden montiert.
Ergänzt wird das Diadem von einem modischen, halsnahen Collier, das umlaufend tropfenförmige Smaragd-Anhänger hat, die ebenfalls von pfeilartigen Motiven unterbrochen werden, aber diesmal von hängenden Smaragdreihen getrennt sind. Um die Dimensionen des Halsbands zu erfassen, der farbig abgebildete Tropfen des Collier links, misst ca.6,6ct, 16,7mm x 11mm x 5,5mm ca.5,8ct Diamanten und ist in Silber mit Gold gearbeitet.

Weiterhin hatte die Parure noch einen großen Brustschmuck im selben Stil, zwei Schulterbroschen und Armbänder und Ohrgehänge. Diese wurden aber nie getragen, da Amélie keine gestochenen Ohrläppchen hatte.
Auch der dazugehörige Corsagenschmuck wurde scheinbar nie getragen. Hier bevorzugte sie einen anderen großen Corsagenschmuck, den sie von ihrem Großonkel und Paten, dem Herzog von Aumale zur Hochzeit geschenkt bekommen hat.

Es ist anzunehmen, dass dieser zu den persönlichen Smaragden seiner Mutter Königin Maria Amalia von Frankreich gehörte, den der Herzog vererbt bekommen hat. Die Erscheinung dieses Juwels mit seinen wuchtig ausgearbeiteten, plastisch floralen Ranken, die typisch ein ovales Mittelteil umgeben und den ursprünglichen angehängten Girlanden und Anhängern, lässt auf ein früheres Entstehungsdatum schließen, als in einem (Auktions)Katalog mit ca. 1890 angegeben ist.

Eine Inventarbeschreibung der Juwelen von Königin Maria Amalia von Frankreich träfe auch auf dieses herrliche Stück zu. Eine "Dévant de Corsage" mit insgesamt sieben Smaragden, wovon drei Smaragde in Anhängern gefasst sind. Amélie dürfte eine sentimentale Beziehung in Gedenken an ihre Urgroßmutter dazu gehabt haben.

Um 1900 wurde die Garnitur noch um einen Smaragd-Choker ergänzt. Dieser Corsagenschmuck ist mehrfach versteigert worden, allerdings da nur noch der obere Teil. Die angehängten Diamantgirlanden und Smaragde wurden schon früher entfernt. Die verwendeten Steine waren ein großer Smaragd im Scherenschliff von 11,50 Karat der von 16 Altschliff-Diamanten von zusammen ca. 10 Karat umgeben ist. Seitlich befinden sich zwei Smaragde in Fantasieschliffen von zusammen 5 Karat.
Die gesamte übrige Fassung ist in Gold und Silber gearbeitet und mit weiteren 134 Altschliff-Diamanten von zusammen ca. 13 Karat besetzt.

Amélie von Portugal hinterließ 1951 diese Corsage, den Armreif und die Anhänger-Brosche, Prinzessin Esperanza, sie war eine Ihrer Patentöchter.
Dom Pedro Ihr Mann erzählte, der Schmuck wurde in einer Blechdose nach Brasilien geschickt um den Zoll zu vermeiden. Information from Vincent Mylan March 19th 2016
Dona Esperanza gab die Smaragde als Hochzeitsgeschenk an ihre Tochter Prinzessin Maria da Glória, als sie Prinz Alexander von Jugoslawien heiratete. Sie liess sich Jahre später wieder scheiden und heiratete den Herzog von Segorbe.
Im Dezember 1981 versteigert Prinzessin Maria da Gloria die Smaragd-Juwelen. Gabriele Murdock bekam bei der Versteigerung den Zuschlag. Danach kam lediglich der historische Brustschmuck noch zweimal zum Verkauf: 1999 und 2005 wo er ein Ergebnis von USD 240.000 erzielte.

Queen Amelie's Emerald Tiara|Royal Jewels Portugal

The jewels of Marie Amélie of Orléans (1865-1951), Queen of Portugal. Princess Amélie was born on September 28, 1865 in Twickenham England, the daughter of Prince Philippe, Count of Paris and Maria Isabel of Orléans-Montpensier.
Her great-grandparents were the last king of France, Louis-Philippe and Queen Maria Amalia. In 1886 she married the Portuguese heir Charles (Carlos).
In 1889 as Carlo I ascended the Portuguese throne, she was the last queen of Portugal. The crown jewels of Portugal had been made available only after the accession of her husband; previously she only had access to her personal collection that she received as wedding presents. Her future husband Carlos gave her a diamond diadem which is convertible to a collier and is still worn in the Braganza family. In addition, she received a highly fashionable, asymmetrical necklace with sapphires and enamelled, diamond-set opera glasses with their initials and a crown. Both pieces are in the style of the French jeweler Boucheron.

From Portugal came a wide, 13cm long Portuguese brooch in the style of an aigrette of the 18th century with attached drop pearls. In 1888 the Portuguese court appointed the  house of Leitao e Irmao as court jewelers.

Also from Portugal could have come a large emerald cabochon of 32 carats and an attached emerald drop of 23 carats and diamonds of about 6 carats in the form of a brooch.
A bracelet with an emerald cabochon of 30 carats and diamonds of approximately 12 carats will probably have been a gift.

As crown princess, Marie Amélie already owned an emerald set by the Parisian jeweler Bapst which was allegedly created by Vever in 1872 and, therefore, it could have belonged to her mother previously.
The parure is in the flamboyant style of the "Third Republic", consisting of a diamond tiara with seven large emeralds alternating with striking, arrow-like peaks and are separated by towering rows of diamonds. Everything is mounted on a base with diamonds and small emeralds.
Additional elements of the parure include a fashionable, close-fitting collar having circumferentially teardrop-shaped emerald pendant, which are also broken by arrow-like motifs, but this time are separated by hanging emerald rows. To grasp the dimensions of the collar, the colorized drop of  the collier seen left, measures approximately 6.6 carats, 16.7mm x 11mm x 5.5mm surrounded by approximately 5.8 carats of diamonds and is made in silver with gold.

Furthermore, the parure still has a large corsage brooch in the same style, two shoulder brooches and bracelets and earrings. These were never worn since Amélie didn't have pierced earlobes.
Also the associated corsage was apparently never worn. She preferred another great corsage brooch given to her by her great uncle and godfather, the Duke of Aumale as a wedding gift.

It is likely that this was one of the personal emeralds the Duke inherited from his mother Queen Maria Amalia of France. The publication of this jewel with its powerfully drawn, plastically floral tendrils that typically surround an oval middle part and the original attached garlands and pendants, suggests an earlier date of origin, as stated in an (auction-)catalogue, of about 1890.

An inventory description of a "devant de corsage" with seven emeralds, with three emeralds set in pendants of  the jewels of Queen Maria Amalia of France would also apply to this magnificent piece. Amélie probably had a sentimental relationship with the jewel in memory of her great-grandmother.

In 1900 the emerald pieces were complemented by an emerald choker.
The corsage brooch has been auctioned several times; however, it is only the upper part as the attached diamond garlands and emeralds were removed earlier. The stones used were a large emerald in scissor cut of 11.50 carats surrounded by 16 old cut diamonds together about 10 carats. Laterally there are two emeralds totalling 5 carats.
The other version is worked in gold and silver and set with another 134 old cut diamonds totalling about 13 carats.

Amélie of Portugal bequeathed the corsage, the bracelet and the pendant brooch to Princess Esperanza (not to Esperanza's mother). She was one of the Queen's godchildren. Princess Maria da Gloria, who received the jewels as wedding gift from her mother, sold the jewelery in 1981 at auction. Thereafter, only the historical corsage brooch came up twice more for sale: 1999 and 2005, where it achieved a price of $240,000 USD.
