Wedding Prince Karl and Grand Duchess Maria Kirillovna of Russia
The diamond tiara with hanging swags, fringes and garlands with bows and lovers' knots is designed as a kokoshnik with eleven spikes on top. The tiara was later redesigned as necklace for her daughter Grand Duchess Maria Kyrillovna, when she married the hereditary Prince Karl of Leiningen in 1925 at Coburg. Masha, as she was called by her family, was the eldest daughter of Grand Duke Kirill and his wife Victoria Melita. She wore a bridal gown in the same design as her grandmother Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna, Duchess of Edinburgh. On her head she wore a kokoshnik with large diamond stars. Princess Karl of Leiningen is on the right pictured with the tiara in 1935. A very similar item to this filigree diamond kokoshnik is the tiara of the Princess zu Loewenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg. A similar model was also produced by Chaumet.
