Diamond Tiara - Wedding Present Diadem mit Saphircabochons der Prinzessin von Battenberg Als Beatrice sich in Louis Napoleon, Sohn des Kaisers Napoleon III., verliebte, bahnte sich eine Tragödie an - nicht nur, weil ihre Mutter es ihr strikt verboten hatte, eine Beziehung zu irgend einem Mann einzugehen - zu Eugenie de Montijo, seiner Mutter hatte sie ebenfalls einen innigen Kontakt.. Baby, wie sie von ihrer Mutter genannt wurde, begleitete sie auf eine Hochzeit nach Hessen und fand Gefallen an dem jungen Prinzen Henry "Liko" von Battenberg. Sohn des Prinzen Alexander von Hessen mit der Gräfin von Battenberg, Julia Hanke. Die Braut erhielt von ihren Schwiegereltern, dem Prinzen Alexander von Hessen und der Prinzessin von Battenberg, das oben abgebildete Diadem mit Saphircabochons und Diamanten, (in der Zeichnung mit der Prinzessin ist es auch nachgebildet, die Braut, trug tatsächlich aber ein anderes Diadem, anlässlich ihrer Hochzeitszeremonie) . Ein sehr ähnliches viktorianisches Diadem wurde im Jahr 2000 angeboten und könnte ein weiteres Geschenk für Beatrice gewesen sein - allerdings da noch komplett mit den etwas kleineren Zwischenelementen. Die Größe dieser inzwischen fehlenden Teile lässt sich gut an den beiden auslaufenden Enden nachvollziehen. Die Tatsache, dass dieses Stück noch diese diamantenen Enden hat, ist ein Merkmal dafür, andernfalls hätte man ein Diadem mit nur drei Hauptteilen produziert. Zusätzlich erkennt man, dass Teile fehlen, weil der Sprung der Diamanten in den auslaufenden Scrolls direkt am Bügel zu groß ist. Dieser Unterschied wurde durch die fehlenden Zwischenelemente aufgefangen, die dann entsprechend zwei angrenzende Steine hatten, die im Größenverlauf dazwischen lagen und alles damit eine ausgewogene Proportion erhielt und in seiner Optik harmonisch nach hinten auslief. Der ovale Anhänger in Muschelform mit Saphir, die Ohrringe mit Saphir und Diamanten und das Armband waren das Geschenk des Bräutigams an die Braut. Die grosse Brosche links wurden von seinem Bruder, Prinz Alexander von Bulgarien überreicht. This artist’s interpretation of the bride is inaccurate as she wore her diamond star tiara on the occasion of her marriage. The gift of the bridegroom was the shell pendant with sapphires and diamonds, a bracelet and a pair of earrings. His brother Prince Alexander of Bulgaria presented the large brooch with sapphires and diamonds. That lace was a present from the Queen to Princess Beatrice. The Victorian diamond set tiara, with stylised fleur-de-lys and scroll motifs graduating from the centre and set with old round brilliant-cut and rose-cut diamonds, total estimated weight 30cts, all mounted in silver grain and cut-down settings on yellow gold back, convertible into a necklace circa 1870 was sold in 2000 for £42500 and looked very similar of these above in the sketch. A Description of the Wedding Day A procession of fourteen carriages left Osborne House. The royal route was decorated with flags hung on masts, triumphal arches and stands for the crowds to get a view. A boarded footway and canopy led from the churchyard gate to the church door, with additional seating built outside. Inside the church the floor had been covered in crimson cloth and oriental rugs. The Illustrated London News reported “exquisite flowers were everywhere”. Just eight Islanders made it into the church for this state occasion. In place of the vicar were the Lord Chamberlain, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Bishop of Winchester and the Dean of Windsor. In place of the local choir was the choir of St George’s Chapel, Windsor. The royal family took their seats to the sound of Handel’s March from the Occasional Overture. Then, at 1pm, the Wedding March sounded and Princess Beatrice advanced along the aisle accompanied by ten royal bridesmaids, her nieces: Princesses Louise, Victoria and Maud of Wales, Alexandra of Hesse; Marie, Victoria Melita, and Alexandra of Edinburgh, Helena Victoria and Marie Louise of Schleswig-Holstein and Princess Alice of Albany. With the service complete the wedding party returned to Osborne through the cheering crowds. Two large boarded reception marquees had been built either side of the palace. One was reserved for the guests of “royal blood” and the other was for the rest. Back at the church there was no such decorum. The excited crowds rushed in to seize any mementos of the great occasion. Beatrice and Henry settled to happy married life at Osborne. Over the next five years she gave birth to Alexander, Victoria Eugenie, Leopold and Maurice.
