Mountbatten Tiara

Edwina Countess Mountbatten of Burma

The tiara rests on a line of channel-set brilliants and is surmounted by another border, similarly set, rising to a point in the center with a trefoil above and smaller trefoils at intervals to each side.

The space between is filled with running scrolls interspersed with trefoils meeting a figure of eight in the middle. This grand design, typical of Chaumet, compares with a nickel silver replica in that firm’s collection of tiara models.
The Mountbatten tiara was made c. 1910 French of Platinum, millegrain setting, diamonds.
It was worn by the first Countess Mountbatten of Burma to the many formal events she attended as a relation by marriage to George V, George VI, and Elizabeth II, and the duke of Edinburgh. While her husband officiated as viceroy and then governor general of India, (1947-48), she alternated it with another tiara of pearls and diamonds, because, according to her daughter, “she could not be seen twice in the same one.”
This tiara passed from the Countess Mountbatten of Burma to her daughter Lady Pamela Hicks. It was sold at auction on December 2002 at Sotheby’s.
