Royal Wedding | Memorials of the Occasion
Princess Alexandra of Denmark was married to Albert Edward, Prince
of Wales, on 10 March 1863. As a wedding present she was given a suite
of Brussels lace to wear by King Leopold but Queen Victoria declared
it inappropriate. She decreed that the dress of the future Queen must
be entirely of British manufacture, trimmed with English Honiton lace
with a pattern of cornucopia. The lace was designed and executed by
Messrs Jon Tucker and Co.
This photograph shows Alexandra wearing the English lace overlaid with
swags of artificial orange blossom.
Pinned to her sleeve, is the badge of the Order of Victoria and Albert.
Queen Victoria presented this badge of the Order of Victoria and Albert
to her future daughter-in-law, Princess Alexandra of Denmark, on the
day before her wedding. The badge incorporates the profile portraits
of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who had died in 1861. The cameo
was engraved by Tommaso Saulini, silver gilt, diamond, enamel, ruby,
glass 8.5 x 4.4.
A few gifts were made by Garrards at the command of the Prince of Wales
for presentation to various members of the Royal Families of England
and Denmark, as memorials of the occasion.
Bottom left is a brooch in gold, jewels and enamel. The gift was presented
to Queen Victoria to mark the date.
This pendent locket is one of five, of similar design. It was the gift
of the Prince of Wales to his sisters: the Princess Royal (Crown Prince
of Prussia), the Princess Alice (Princess Louis of Hesse) and the Princesses
Helena, Louise and Beatrice.
One of two heart-shaped lockets made by command of the Prince of Wales
for giving to the Princesses Dagmar and Thyra, sisters of the Princess
of Wales
Again many thanks to Laura for help!
