The feather jewel with pear-shaped pearls- composed of five diamond-set branches suspending graduated pearl drops from a partially diamond-set stem - measures approximately 13.0 cm in length.
It is one of the rare surviving jewels that can be securely associated with the Portuguese royal collections and identified today in private hands.
This feather ornament, designed to be worn in the hair or on a bodice, belonged to Maria Francisca Benedita, Princess of Brazil and Infanta of Portugal (1746–1829). Set with diamonds and natural pearls, it represents a remarkable survival from the court of her sister, Queen Dona Maria I (1734–1816).
The youngest daughter of King Dom José I (1714–1777), Dona Benedita was the widow of her nephew, Dom José, Prince of Brazil (1761–1788). Although she never became queen, she maintained a significant presence at court and cultivated a refined and distinctive taste in jewellery.
Her collection was exceptional. Among the recorded pieces are a 110-carat sapphire pendant and the so-called Runa monstrance, set with over 100 carats of brilliant-cut diamonds, alongside emeralds, topazes, and large aquamarines. The design-early Neo-Gothic in character-has even been attributed to the princess herself.
Rather than traditional aristocratic patronage, her legacy is most profoundly reflected in the hospital she founded at Runa, intended for wounded and elderly soldiers-a charitable institution that remains active to this day.
The feather jewel was bequeathed to the Countess of Ribeira Grande, D. Mariana de Almeida Portugal (1785–1849). It subsequently descended within the family to her great-granddaughter, D. Mariana do Carmo da Câmara Pinto Coelho (1883–1953), remaining in the family until its sale at auction in 2006.
At that time, it was mistakenly attributed to the 19th century.
The jewel is most likely the work of Captain João Paulo da Silva, a jeweller favoured by the princess. Stylistically and technically, it can be dated to the 1770s–1780s.
In the early 20th century, the piece was adapted into a brooch by Leitão & Irmão, at the request of a member of the Câmara family-reflecting the common practice of reinterpreting 18th-century court jewels for modern wear.
This feather ornament is a magnificent survival of 18th-century Portuguese court jewellery. It stands as a rare and tangible testament to the refined taste, personal legacy, and cultural influence of Dona Benedita, whose role at court extended far beyond dynastic expectations.
When it was offered for auction in the year 2006 for €37 000 - 51 000 - it was bought from Mr Joseph Saidian and son, NY.
