THE JEWELS OF BILLIONAIRES. Gladys Moore Vanderbilt, Countess Széchenyi 1886 - , 1965 was an American heiress from the Vanderbilt family and wife of Hungarian Count László Széchenyi. She was born as Gladys Moore Vanderbilt in 1886, the seventh and youngest child of Alice Claypoole Gwynne and her husband Cornelius Vanderbilt II, the president and chairman of the New York Central Railroad. She inherited about $25 million from her father's estate and a further $5 million from her mother's estate. She also inherited The Breakers. In 1948, as a widow, she leased The Breakers to the Preservation Society of Newport County for $1 a year. She continued to maintain an apartment in The Breakers by agreement until her death. In 1913, there were rumors that she was going to leave her husband due to his financial woes, including gambling away all of her dowry. Her first cousin was Consuelo Vanderbilt, Duchess of Marlborough, who had married Charles Spencer-Churchill, 9th Duke of Marlborough. Mrs. William Douglas Sloan, an aunt of the bride-elect, sent a beautiful neckpiece and stomacher of turquoise and diamonds, and from Mrs. Henry Payne
Whitney there was a stomacher of sapphires and diamonds.
Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Vanderbilt's gift was a necklace of pearls and diamonds, and from Mr. and Mrs. Reginald C. Vanderbilt there was a long chain of diamonds. The Duchess of Marlborough, a cousin of Miss Gladys, sent a long rope chain of pearls, with tassels of pearls and diamonds, and from Mr. and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt, Jr., there was a ring set with a large marquis diamond. Mrs. Almeric Paget sent from London a pendant of sapphires and diamonds and from the children of Mr.and Mrs. Henry Payne Whitney there was a diamond ring. The gift of Doctor and Mrs. W. Seward Webb was a ring set with rubies and diamonds. There was a full dinner service of silver from members of the Vanderbilt family. Mrs. Elliot F. Shepard
sent a beautiful tea service of silver and Mr. and Mrs. H. Mac. Twombly, massive silver candelabra and candle sticks for the dinner table.
Mrs. W. B. Osgood Field's present was a bag fitted with silver necessities for an automobile trip, little Miss Kathleen Vanderbilt, a niece of Miss Gladys, sent
a set of gold plates, and Mrs. Frederick Neilson a large cloisonne box of circular shape suitable for a jewel casket.
