Crafted around 1930, this tiara exemplifies the Art Deco movement's bold, geometric patterns and meticulous craftsmanship. The use of old-cut diamonds set in platinum, a hallmark of the era, reflects a luxurious simplicity.
Margaret Thompson Biddle, born in 1896 in Helena, Montana, was the daughter of William Boyce Thompson, a prominent figure in the copper mining industry. Her father's success, marked by the founding of the Newmont Mining Corporation, set the stage for Margaret's affluent and culturally enriched life. Her marriage in 1931 to Anthony Drexel Biddle Jr., a notable Philadelphia socialite and diplomat, further elevated her status in high society.
The Biddles' diplomatic journey, encompassing roles from the Minister to Norway to Ambassador to Poland, exposed Margaret to a world of international politics and cultural exchanges. Her life, especially post-World War II, was a whirlwind of high-society events and intellectual gatherings, making her a celebrated socialite and hostess in her residences in France, including a luxurious home on the French Riviera and a hotel particulier in Paris.
Margaret's interests were diverse, extending beyond jewelry to fine porcelain, silver, and art. Her collection, part of which was gifted to former First Lady Eisenhower and is still displayed in The White House, speaks to her impeccable taste and eye for design. The Chaumet tiara, part of Christie's auction of her collection, stands as a testament to this elegance.
Her personal life, marked by a divorce, a second marriage to Biddle, and their eventual separation, did not diminish her zest for life and her love for the diplomatic circle. Her Parisian soirees were frequented by luminaries such as the Eisenhowers, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and various French creatives, showcasing her influence in high society.
Margaret's role as a writer and correspondent for various magazines, alongside her avid participation in social and political events, even Communist rallies, reflected her multifaceted personality and strong character. Her untimely death in 1956, surrounded by mystery and investigated by the French police, added a tragic end to her extraordinary life.
The autstanding Chaumet Art Deco Diamond Tiara, in Halo design, with its rich history and connection to such a fascinating figure, is not just a piece of jewelry but a symbol of a bygone era of glamour, culture, and intrigue. It's a piece that speaks volumes about the time it was made and the extraordinary life of the woman who once owned it. We see above in the picture another famous jewels of her, the pear-shaped diamond necklace which was worn of her in another version earlier. As well as her important palmtree diamond brooch.
