Emerald jewelry with diamonds of Augustus the Strong of Saxony | Princess Maria Immaculata of Saxony Duchess of Saxony | Royal Jewels History

On October 30, 1906, Prince Johann Georg von Sachsen married his second wife, Princess Maria Immaculata Cristina Pia Isabella of Bourbon-Sicily, daughter of Alfons Maria, Count of Caserta and Princess Maria Antonia of Naples-Sicily, in Cannes.

The princess was born in Cannes on October 30th, 1874. The wedding day of the princess was thus also her birthday.

On behalf of his father to King George of Saxony (married to Princess Maria Anna of Portugal 1843-1884) and later representing his brother Friedrich August, the King of Saxony (married to Archduchess Louise of Tuscany - she left the family in 1902) the prince and his wife, participated in many important events. Princess Marie Immaculata was the highest-ranking woman at court at this time and was increasingly used for representative duties, in particular for deputation receptions, participation in opening and anniversary celebrations, as well as for events and festivities of all kinds.

Princess Maria Immaculata also wore the emeralds of the Saxon royal family on these occasions. The design for the diadem is from Köchert, Vienna and is still in the archive and dates to around 1840.

Luise von Toscana scandal at the royal court:

As everyone knows, the emeralds of the King of Saxony have a world-famous reputation and when I got married they were left to me to wear.

It was a splendid jewelry consisting of a tiara, necklace and bracelets made of emeralds and diamonds .

I was happy to have such magnificent stones, but I didn't like the heavy and ancient setting and asked for permission to have the collar reset.

The splendor of the stones and my artistic taste helped me to order a completely new necklace, which was executed like a lovely, perfectly beautiful Renaissance drawing.

I decided to wear it for the first time at a gala performance and chose a lovely pink chiffon robe that went beautifully with the mysterious green splendor of the stone. I sat down with conscious pride in my box, which was opposite the royal box on the other side of the opera house. When the Majesties saw me, they kept staring and staring with their opera glasses at my necklace . A whispering consultation took place, and I was called over to the royal box. The king received me very coldly and asked me how dare I change the royal family jewelry.

A ghastly scene followed.

Luise of Austria-Tuscany not only had the famous August the Strong emerald necklace reset, which she had been allowed to do, but also had reworked the whole set at the same time. She hadn't liked the way it was.

Needless to say, this arbitrariness did not please the royal family. Under the motto: transport your jewelry like a king.

ROYAL WEDDING • October 30, 1906 the wedding of HRH Prince Jean-Georges of Saxony to Princess Marie-Immaculata of Bourbon-Sicily

The wedding of HRH Prince Johann George of Saxony to Princess Marie-Immaculata of Bourbon-Sicily was celebrated yesterday morning in Cannes.

The crowd rushed to see the wedding procession, which was accompanied by twenty-four mounted gendarmes.

The procession, coming from the Boulevard de la Croisette, reached the Notre-Dame de Bon-Voyage church at eleven o'clock, which was splendidly decorated with flowers.

Wagner's wedding march was played on the large organ.

Prince Alfonso de Bourbon, Count of Caserta, head of the royal family of the Two Sicilies, wore the large ribbon of the Golden Fleece and the insignia of the Great Order of the Two Sicilies, led the sublime fiancée to the altar, who looked delightful in her white, lace-trimmed wedding dress. The veil made of Alençon lace was held in place by a small tiara made of orange blossom that encircled the hair like a crown. Around her neck she wore a diamond riviere, a gift from the groom.

The King of Saxony led Her Royal Highness Princess Antoinette of Bourbon, Countess of Caserta. Prince John George lent his arm to Queen Carola of Saxony.

Then follow:

The Duke of Calabria and Archduchess Maria-Josepha, Archduke Karl and the Duchess of Calabria, Prince Xavier de Bourbon and Princess Mathilde of Saxony, Prince Karl of Hohenzollern and Princess Pia of Bourbon, Prince Rainer of Bourbon and Princess Maria-Josepha of Bourbon.

Some toilets: Queen widow of Saxony: purple brocade dress with old lace and matching hat; Countess of Caserta: mauve-colored dress with purple velvet, silver embroidery and old lace, mauve-colored bonnet with silver embroidery and white, hanging feather, necklace with diamonds; Princesses Pia and Marie-Josépha von Bourbon, sisters of the bride: dresses made of soft, cream-colored silk, trimmed with Irish lace, otter hats with large ostrich feathers; Duchess of Mecklenburg: very elegant toilet with a magnificent coat and mauve-colored shimmering boa, hood with a feather and a diamond chain; Duchess of Calabria: dress made of soft painted silk, decorated with pompadour ribbons and old lace ... etc.

The church was overcrowded. His Royal Highness Prince Maximilian of Saxony, brother of the King of Saxony and Prince Johann Georg, who was a priest, waited at the altar. Mgr. Chapon, Bishop of Nice, wore the violet cappa, and Mgr. De Curel, Bishop of Monaco, with the Mozetta (large shoulder collar or cape), waited in the choir.

Seated behind the bridal couple: on the right - the King of Saxony with Queen Carola and the Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes, on behalf of the President of the Republic; left - TRH the Count and Countess of Caserta and behind them the parents of the bridal couple and then the princely guests. After a touching speech by the Bishop of Nice, HRH Prince Maximilian of Saxony gave his brother and sister-in-law the wedding blessing and then he celebrated the mass, framed by beautiful music.

At the end of the ceremony, the bishops of Nice and Monaco jointly gave the blessing. The wedding procession was respectfully greeted and cheered by a huge crowd as it left the church. The sublime bride and groom answered with a smile.

An intimate lunch was served at Villa Marie-Thérèse after returning from church. For dessert, the Count of Caserta brought out a toast to the health of the king of the entire Royal Family of Saxony.
