Princess Fawzia of Egypt, later known as Fawzia Pahlavi The engagement was announced in May 1938 and the picture above was taken of her wearing the engagement gift of the shah - the diamond pendant earrings, which are now in the vault of the banque of iran.
The extraordinary beautiful looking Princess is seen also wearing a very fashionable gold and diamond Tube Necklace, probably made in Paris. My dear friend Stefan Stern- Grafische Sammlung Stern, has bought some sketches from a french designer H.Nalbandian Eaubonne near Paris, from the 1940th which is similar to the necklace above. Nothing is known yet, but there are a picture of her sister wearing the necklace on the wedding in 1939. The Egypt Royals are very fond of the new House of Van Cleef and Arpels, but also Maison Boucheron was ordererd to build outstanding jewels for the Queen of Egypt and her daughters.
Crown Prince Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and Princess Fawzia wed on March 15, 1939, at the Abdeen Palace in Cairo. The ceremony, attended by dignitaries and marked by lavish celebrations, was a spectacle of royal opulence. King Farouk, Fawzia's brother, hosted a grand tour of Egypt for the newlyweds, showcasing the splendor of the Egyptian heritage. However, the contrast between the luxurious Egyptian court and the more modest Iranian royal family was stark. Upon arriving in Iran, the cultural and personal differences between Fawzia and her new family became evident. She struggled to adapt to her new life, finding the food and accommodations inferior to what she was accustomed to in Egypt. Her relationship with Reza Shah was strained, as she found him to be a harsh and domineering figure. Despite the initial enthusiasm, Fawzia's marriage to Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was fraught with difficulties. She was deeply unhappy, feeling isolated and out of place in Iran. Her relationship with her mother-in-law and sisters-in-law was particularly contentious, with frequent clashes over her role and influence. Moreover, Mohammad Reza's infidelities added to her misery, and by 1944, she was being treated for depression by an American psychiatrist. In May 1945, Fawzia returned to Cairo and obtained an Egyptian divorce, a move that highlighted her profound dissatisfaction with life in Tehran. The divorce, granted in 1948, stipulated that their daughter, Princess Shahnaz, would be raised in Iran. Fawzia's return to Egypt marked the end of her time as Queen of Iran, and she sought solace and a fresh start in her homeland. In 1949, Fawzia married Colonel Ismail Chirine, an Egyptian diplomat. This marriage brought her more personal happiness and stability. Together, they had a son and a daughter, and Fawzia lived a more peaceful and private life away from the political spotlight. Fawzia's later years were marked by silence and seclusion, especially after the 1952 Egyptian revolution. She never publicly recounted her experiences in the courts of Egypt and Iran, leaving much of her personal history shrouded in mystery. Known as the "sad queen" by the press, Fawzia passed away on July 2, 2013, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and grace amid the turbulent tides of royal politics and personal tribulations.
