When she married in 1900 this important pearl drop brooch, was given to her in June 7th, an very large pearl and diamond pendant brooch, with four diamonds and a large diamond between the oval top of pearl and the important pearshaped pearl drop.
Probably the gift from Anastasia Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin or one of the other brothers of her bridegroom: the Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich, the Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich or the Grand Duke Nicholas Mikhailovich, Grand Duke Alexei Mikhailovich, all very weatlhy.
She later wore the top of the Romanov brooch together with another oval brooch as frame, from 1889, which was presented to her from Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovitch of Russsia, her brother-in-law and her sister Grand Duchess Alexandra Georgievna of Russia.
The large Romanov pearl drop was one of her favorite jewels, she used it frequently on the Romanov pearls, when she wore it a slong strings, as a pendant.
The design of the oval pearl brooch with the four diamonds in 4 claws, are realy similar to a sapphire brooch, which was owned by the Empress Dowager Maria Alexandrovna Romanov, and was later in the possession of the Duchess of Kent Marina and Katherine Duchess of Kent.
The Romanov Sapphire Cabochon Brooch, was on the Hennell list and sold probably to Queen Mary of England.
Another turquoise cabochon brooch is known in this style, it was a wedding gift of the Duke of Devonshire to the Crownprincess Margaret of Sweden, now owned by the Queen of Denmark and sometimes worne.
