The splendid Pearl and Diamond Necklace of the Infanta Eulalia of Spain

Doch was war geschehen?

The splendid Pearl and Diamond Necklace of the Infanta Eulalia of Spain

In 1886 the Spanish princess H.R.H. the Infanta Doña Eulalia of Spain married her first cousin Antonio de Orléans y de Borbón, Infante of Spain and Duke of Galliera of political reasons.
She was compensated with magnificent jewels, this fabulous necklace was the present from her godparents and parents-in-law, the Duke and Duchess of Montpensier. The jewel contains 639 brilliants and 334 pearls in eight strands from which hang 40 other pearls of greater size.
Together with another wedding gift, an amazing tiara, both pieces were exhibited in the premises of Marzo in Madrid in 1886.

On top the Infanta Eulalia magnificent portrait that Giovanni Boldini painted in 1898 of her.It seems that Doña Eulalia was very fond of it, in front of it a scetch of the splendid Necklace.
The Infanta settled permantly in Paris, after the many troubles through her marriage, far from the court of Madrid, because of her quarrels with her nephew King Alfonso XIII and she wore this tiara at many times of the social parties, as one of her stars, until the end of the Belle-Epoque. In 1920's she return to Spain and decided to leave in Madrid her most important pieces of jewellery, which were deposited at the vaults of the royal palace for safekeeping.
But in 1931 with the fall of the Spanish monarchy and the arrival of the Republic she had to wait for four years until she could claim that her personal jewels be returned to her by the republican government.
She wrote to the spanish authorities in 1935, but by the time the latter tried to find out what had happened to the Infanta`s valuables all her jewels had mysteriously disappeared. There was talk of them having been stolen from the vaults of the royal palace and it was even rumoured that the person who had stolen them had been killed.

Many years later she was still hoping that the new regime of General Franco would help her, the Infanta Eulalias petition was not avail, no lead of the splendid tiara could ever be found since this days.
