This important pearl and diamond brooch, devant de corsage, was part of the collection of duchess Louise Marie Thérèse d'Artois of Parme, nee princess Louise of Bourbon Artois (1819-1864) grand daughter to Charles X the last king of France. As the granddaughter of the king, Louise was a petite-fille de France.
She was born in Paris, as the eldest daughter of Charles Ferdinand, Duke of Berry, younger son of King Charles X of France and Princess Caroline of Naples and Sicily.
Louise's father died when she was five months old. When her grandfather abdicated in 1830, Louise joined the rest of her immediate family in exile, eventually settling in Austria.
In Austria she married the crown prince of Parma in 1845 at Frohnsdorf and moved to northern Italy, for a very short time. In 1855, her husband who had given her four children was assassinated in a street of Parma at dawn as he was leaving one of his many mistresses.
Louise Marie Thérèse d'Artois, served as regent of Parma during the minority of her son Robert, from 1854 until 1859.
The brooch, with a large double petal rose, in the centre, with leaves, buts and sprigs, was made before 1856 and possibly with pearls and diamonds also once in the jewelry box of Marie Antoinette Queen of France.
Louise Marie Thérèse d'Artois, Duchess of Parma, was the beloved niece of Marie Antoinette’s only daughter and heir, Madame Royale, duchesse d’Angouleme. And when that princess died, Louise received one third of her impressive jewelry collection (most of it inherited from her mother). Unfortunately Louise lost her dukedom in 1859 and she had to go into exile again. She had a large private fortune, so her last years were quite comfortable. She died young in 1864. She was only 45.
The brooch was altered by Köchert Vienna, see the sketch above, top left.
The Bourbon Parma Family had worn the brooch, with the two pendants, as earrings with pendants. On the right side, the picture shows the brooch when it was offered for auction in 1969.
It was sold on July 31 at auction at Parke-Bernet for $19 200 USD.
