This splendid parure originally belonged to Princess Ekatarina Pavlovna Bagration, née Skavronskaia (1783 - 1857) wife of Prince Peter Ivanovic Bagration (1765 - 1812), himself a descendant of the Bagration kings of Georgia, a distinguished General who died fighting for the Russian army at the battle of Borodino against Napoleon.
Princess Ekatarina (Kathrine) was an outstanding beauty who dressed in the heights of fashion until her death and hosted important salons in various European cities - for example in Vienna for the Congress of 1815. She had many admirers and married her second husband, an English lord at about this time.
This parure which dates about 1810 was probably a wedding gift.It was attributed to Fossin & Fils, a predecessor of the French jeweler Chaumet, the parure was purchased by the Russian Princess Katharine Bagration, heiress to Prince Potemkin and listed in the 1836 inventory of her jewels. Its extravagant size and pattern suggest the illustrious lineage of its first owner.
It was thus fitting that the Duke of Westminster presented this parure to his future bride, who wore the tiara at her wedding in 1978. Here Her Grace Natasha Phillips, wears the tiara over her wedding veil.
The Duchess of Westminster has imperial Russian connections through her descent from Grand Duke Mikhail Mikhailovich and his wife Sophie von Merenberg, Countess Torby
