Two great shoulder knots set with 1341 brilliants weighing 282 3/16 carats.
The inspiration for the design of the important bow brooches was taken from the period of Marie Antoinette.
Each consisted of five rows of brilliants with the middle enriched with large stones mounted in claws. In December 1863 it was designed by Alfred Bapst for the court mantle of the Empress Eugenie.
In 1887 at the great auction of the French Crown jewels, the knots estimated value were 78,600 francs and sold to M. Doutrelon for 84,000 francs.
In 1903 Mrs Odgen Goelet presented both brooches as a wedding gift to her daughter May, when she married the Duke of Roxburghe. In the picture above, the Duchess of Roxburghe wore the diamond knots: one on her shoulder and the other pinned to the front of her gown's bodice. The picture is taken in 1912. .
