The parure of Marie-Louise Empress of France mosaik parure|Imperial Jewelry France

A gold and mosaic parure, consisting of a comb, a necklace, a pair of bracelets, and a pair of earrings, made by François Regnault Nitot, jeweler to the imperial court, as part of the wedding gifts offered by Emperor Napoleon I to Archduchess Marie-Louise in 1810.

Glass micromosaics depicting Roman ruins. With a red shagreen setting by Jean-Baptiste Nicolas Gouverneur, jeweler to Napoleon III. Through his second marriage in 1810, Napoleon I had managed to ally himself with the oldest of the reigning houses, that of Austria.

Nothing was too beautiful to dazzle the young Archduchess Marie-Louise. Among the jewels offered was the parure by François-Regnault Nitot (1779-1853) adorned with glass micromosaics. This is one of the rare surviving examples of the Crown Treasury that has not undergone any alteration. Through his alliance with Marie-Louise, Napoleon I took his place in a prestigious genealogy.

The wedding was lavish. The future Empress received fine linens, rare lace, numerous bonnets, capes, kerchiefs, shoes, gold-leaf fans, embroidered shawls, ball gowns, day dresses, hunting outfits, frock coats, a gold and silver-gilt dressing-case by the goldsmith Martin-Guillaume Biennais.

And seventy-one 71 sets of jewelry, all provided by the jeweler François-Regnault Nitot (1779-1853).

Among these jewellery parure sets are one made of diamonds, one of pearls, and one parure made of emeralds, parure of topaz , one parure of opals , one parure of rubies , Parure of Turquoises and parure of diamonds.

The more modest set now in the Louvre was also part of this ensemble. This set consists of a necklace, a comb, two bracelets, and two earrings. All of these elements are adorned with rectangular and oval glass paste micro-mosaics. These ten micro-mosaics, framed in blue glass paste, are likely the work of Roman mosaicists who have specialized in this technique since the 18th century. Their favorite themes are generally animals, flowers, reproductions of ancient monuments, or landscapes with ancient ruins. In this set, these ruins include the Tomb of Cecilia Metella, the Forum, and Tivoli. The prints that served as models can sometimes be identified, such as that of Domenico Pronti. The choice of this technique and these motifs reveals the appeal of Antiquity during the First Empire. These micro-mosaics were mounted on delicately chiseled gold vine leaves and bunches of grapes. This type of naturalistic setting was rare under the First Empire and foreshadowed a more widespread taste in the Romantic era.

Micro-mosaic sets were very popular, as revealed by the inventory after the death of Joséphine de Beauharnais, which mentions a mosaic set surrounded by fine stones. Princess Augusta of Bavaria, wife of Eugène de Beauharnais, is portrayed wearing a belt decorated with micro-mosaics.

Marie-Louise's set was included in the Inventory of Crown Diamonds in 1811, and after the fall of the Empire, it returned to the royal collections under Louis XVIII.
