The Emeralds of the Raja of Mandi
To match his necklace of emeralds and diamonds made by Cartier in 1927, the Raja of Mandi ordered an emerald tiara by Cartier London, which was finished in 1930.
He lent the extraordinary array of emeralds for a benefit ball to Mrs Wilfrid Ashley. The Pageant of Gems - Notable Society Women wearing jewels, for benefit, at the Jewels of The Empire Ball, Mrs Wilfrid Ashley was "EMERALDS".
The ballroom of the Park Lane Hotel was transformed into a glittering Aladdin's Cave on the occasion of the recent jewels of the Empire Ball.
Lady Louis Mountbatten the president of the Ball, Mrs Wilfrid Ashley the chairman and many beautiful notabilities of every facet of society and the stage look part in the Pageant, each one representing a jewel.
Mrs Wilfrid Ashley, the stepmother of Edwina Mountbatten, was to become Lady Mount Temple when her husband succeeded to the title in 1932.
Here she is wearing an extraordinary array of emerald beads, an emerald tiara, emerald necklace, an bracelet, a brooch worn at the hip and a tiara by Cartier. The picture was taken at the Jewels of Empire Ball in 1930.
