Few jewels carry a story that spans two royal houses and still surface on the international art market decades later. These large Art Deco diamond earrings with baroque pearl drops belonged to Princess Maria Francesca of Italy, later Princess of Bourbon Parma, and trace back directly to her mother, Queen Elena of Italy.

Princess Maria Francesca of Italy, the youngest daughter of King Victor Emmanuel III and Queen Elena of Italy, born Princess of Montenegro (1873 to 1952), married Prince Louis of Bourbon Parma in 1939. Through this marriage, the House of Savoy connected with the Bourbon Parma line.

The earrings are Art Deco in style, set with diamonds and finished with large baroque pearl drops, described as weighing circa 100 grains each. They originally belonged to Queen Elena, who later gifted them to her youngest daughter, Maria Francesca. That makes them not only royal in style, but royal in ownership with a clear family transfer.

These earrings were not kept out of sight. Princess Maria Francesca was later photographed wearing them, notably in 1952 and again in 1964, including images connected to her son’s wedding. This supports the attribution as a worn, documented royal jewel rather than a vague tradition.

In 2016, the earrings were reportedly offered for sale and presented by Mr. du Duffoy at the Biennale des Antiquaires.

Related Art Deco diamond jewelry were also presented later, including a chaine d’huissier with a platinum and diamond pendant and bracelets similar to those seen in period photographs. Other diamond jewels are referenced as gifts from royal relatives: "Diamond necklaces, earrings and jewelry by HRH the Prince of Piedmont, HRH the Duchess of Parma, LL. AA. RR. the Princes of Bourbon-Parma" but where a piece is mentioned without confirmed photographic evidence of wear as a necklace, it should be described as probable rather than certain.
