MARRIAGE OF PRINCESS MARIE LOUISE OF SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN
"......The Bride looked charming, in her creamy white satin gown, made with a very long train, trimmed with lace, oranges flowers and myrtle. She wore her mother's wedding veil, and the diamond stars I gave her, pinned in amongst the wreath."
Queen Victoria the grandmother of the bride, writing in her dairy on the wedding day.
There is somewhat of a mystery around the stars given by Queen Victoria to her granddaughter. Were they conventional stars resembling the star given by to Princess Marie Louise by the inhabitants of Windsor and Eton? Or were they these magnificent starburst brooches?
It was later explained, the princess wore it at a ball the jewels as : a star and pendant presented to Queen Victoria on her Accession.
These impressive brooches' rays are reminiscent of the setting used in Russian kokoshniks. Not only did Marie Louise wear this jewel but also her sister Princess Helena Victoria. The Queen Mother wore the brooch which was left to her by Princess Marie Louise.
