Imperial Large Comb with Fringes of Diamonds and the Hortensia Diamond| Empress Eugenie| French Crown Jewels

In 1856 the baptism of the Prince Imperial, son of the Empress Eugenie, took place at Notre Dame. For this event, the crown jeweller Bapst completed this important hair ornament. The Empress attended the ceremony dressed in blue and white with a diamond set diadem, a magnificent necklace and a long veil.

A magnificent reception organized by the City of Paris took place that evening. As usual the Empress was most admired for her charm and elegance. Her dress was of white tulle sprinkled with silver stars; the diadem, two-row necklace and riviere, which entirely decorated the upper parts of her bodice, were set with immense diamonds and amethysts.
She wore a wide diamond belt and a large comb set with pear-shaped diamonds especially for the occasion; they formed a rippling cascade of diamonds upon her chignon and the nape of her neck.
This beautiful comb was set with one of the Mazarins.
The comb alone was worth over one million francs.

The exquisite comb was set with nine long diamond pendants called pampilles or fringes. In the top middle the 21.32 Hortensia diamond was placed. It is a five-sided stone of a beautiful pink colour. This was an older possession probably from 1678 and the "Hortensia" was probably cut by a gem retailer named Alvarez, who was one of Louis XIV's supplier and whose diamonds were reputed as "the most beautiful and the biggest ones then on the market" .
And 24 brilliants from the inventory.
