Diamond Palmette Tiara|Anthemium Diadem of Princess Louise of Prussia|Grand Duchess of Baden|Royal Jewels
The Grand Duchess inherited the Palmette Diamond Diadem, most likely from her grandmother Maria Pavlovna Saxe-Weimar.
The portrait above, dated 1906, captures Grand Duchess Luise of Baden on the occasion of her Golden Wedding anniversary. She is adorned with the Diamond Palmette Diadem, a magnificent tiara featuring anthemium ornaments, an elegant design now in the possession of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. This historical jewel remains a symbol of royal heritage and craftsmanship.
Queen Margrethe II wore the tiara during her state visit to Berlin in 2021, showcasing its timeless beauty. The tiara originally belonged to Grand Duchess Luise, who is believed to have inherited it from her grandmother, Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Saxe-Weimar,born Grand Princess of Russia.
A design by the French born jeweler Duval, later Romanov Court jeweler, reveals an identical representation of a palmette diamond tiara, including a striking yellow cluster centerpiece. This design mirrors a pendant later inherited by Queen Ingrid of Denmark and subsequently by Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, both descendants of the Grand Duchess's daughter, Queen Victoria of Sweden.
It is believed that Grand Duchess Luise commissioned alterations to the tiara, possibly from the court jeweler Koch in Frankfurt, to mark her Golden Wedding anniversary. The central element may have been reimagined during this transformation. Earlier depictions of the diadem show seven diamond palmettes, while the current design includes five palmettes, reflecting these modifications.
The palmette motif, derived from the shape of a stylized palm leaf, is a hallmark of classical and neoclassical design. Its symmetrical, fan-like structure conveys elegance and was widely adopted in decorative arts, architecture, and jewelry.
The anthemium is a related ornamental design, inspired by the honeysuckle flower or acanthus leaves. With its flowing curves and radiating elements, the anthemium represents classical beauty and harmony, often used in Greek and Roman art.
Together, these motifs imbue the Diamond Palmette Diadem with a refined aesthetic that celebrates both natural forms and regal sophistication.
