HARRY WINSTON 'THE BRIOLETTE OF INDIA' DIAMOND AND DIAMOND NECKLACE Briolette-cut diamond of 90.38 carats, marquise and pear-shaped diamonds, platinum, two portions of the chain are detachable and may be worn as bracelets, pendant detachable, unsigned, one bracelet with maker's mark Jacques Timey. The stunning 90 carat Briolette of India Diamond Necklace by Harry Winston, originally sold by Cartier in 1909. This South African diamond is considered one of the truly unique gems in the world, not only of it's D color at 90.38ct but also beause of its unusual shpe. The stone is cut in the rarely seen briolette style, the entire suface of this large drop is covered by hundreds of tiny symmetrically placed triangular fecets.
Altough lend has dated the stone back as ar as Eleanor of Aquitaine, in the twelfth centruy, research for tha stone was actually Neun-famous diamond cutters of Atanik Eknayan. The briolette cut was chosen because it bes accommodated the odd shpe of the orginal piece of rough. American philantropist Georg Blumenthal purchased the stone from Cartier in Paris in 1909. In 1946, Harry Winston obtained the diamond from Mrs R.K. Robertson, Blumenthal's widow. The Briolette was sold in 1947 to an Indian maharaja. At that time, it was mounted in such a way that it could be worn as a pendant to a necklace, as a clip, or as a diadem to rest on the forehead of a arem favorite while a diamond bandeau held it firmly in place. Mr Winston repurchased the stone in 1956 at the death of the maharaja. He had it remounted as a pendant to a V-shaped necklace that contained 157 marquise diamonds and subsequently sold it to Mrs I. W. Killiam of Canada. Following Mrs. Killams death in 1967, Mr Winston purchased her entire jewelry collection. In 1971 the Briolette was sold to an important European family.
Later, Mr Horten bough the Indian Briolette to present it to his joung wife. Mrs Horten wore it in the 2010 when she met her friend and singer Udo Jürgens.

Her passion for art and beauty started at an early age through her father, an engraver, and later when she refined her eye for jewelry and works of art during her first marriage. Mr Horten showert her with the best jewels. After her husband's death, Mrs. Horten was passionately involved in social welfare, sports, and medical research. In the 1990s, she started building her private collection of modern and contemporary art, which was first unveiled to the public in 2018. Moved by the tremendous success of the exhibition, Mrs. Horten established a permanent home for her artworks, The Heidi Horten Collection, a modern art museum in Vienna, which opened in June 2022, ten days before she passed away. The exquisite collection of jewels from Mrs. Horten's estate is a testament to her impeccable taste and appreciation of beauty. Christie's is honored to present these jewels to the world, allowing art and jewelry enthusiasts to add a piece of Mrs. Horten's legacy to their own collections. Christie's, the auction house, is set to showcase an exclusive collection 400 of 700 exquisite jewels from the late Mrs. Heidi Horten. The collection will be presented across two live auctions at The Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues in Geneva during Luxury Week this spring, along with two online sales - one in May and the other in November 2023. The first part of the auction series will commence on Wednesday 10 May, followed by the second part on Friday 12 May 2023. Prior to the live auctions, the first online sale will open on 3 May and run until 15 May. The remaining jewels will be offered in the second online sale in November. Consigned by the Heidi Horten Estate, and offered this May in Geneva, the Collection will be devoted to philanthropy, per Mrs. Horten’s wishes: all of the Estate’s proceeds will benefit The Heidi Horten Foundation, established in 2020 to support the museum of modern and contemporary art she founded in Vienna, Austria — The Heidi Horten Collection as well as medical research and other philanthropic activities, which has been supported by her for many decades
