Mellerio Rubin Parure

Mellerio Rubin Parure

Dezember 1888, 160,000 Florins/Gulden....

Ruby Mellerio Parure
Queen Emma, photographed here by Ad Zimmermann in Den Hag in 1891, received the parure as a final gift from her husband.

In 1888, Mellerio received an order from William III to create a jewel set, formed by

  • a tiara,
  • a necklace and
  • a bracelet and
  • a fan
made of rubies and diamonds. The set consisted of a total of 961 gems -385 in the tiara, 425 in the necklace and 135 for the bracelet. A silver model was done, so that queen Emma could test the jewels, before the final set was finished.

The necklace was, probably, too rigid and uncomfortable to wear, so it was later divided into the large corsage brooch, a smaller necklace, a small brooch and earrings. The sketches of this parts, you will see on the follow sites.

Below the original version of the necklace without the gems

Queen Beatrix generally wears the second element of the necklace as brooch.

When Mellerio delivered its work in the palace of Het Loo in October 28, 1888 in platinum, the centerstones can be interchange: rubies, diamonds or other gems of fitting size.(a second sketch was also made with sapphire as part of it)
In the picture above, a commissioned photo that was to be used in the minting of coins, the Widow Queen wears a “white” tiara (changed the rubies with diamonds), black and white the colours for mourning ,in order to show her sorrow..

The bill dated 18th December 1888 was about 160,000 Florins/Gulden....
