The lost diamond jewellery of Empress Alexandra Feodorowna of Russia

It is well known that some of the personal jewelery formerly belonging to the late Empress of Russia was discovered in 1933 in Tobolsk and was confiscated by the Russian government.
The most valuable piece in the treasury was a diamond brooch with a large single diamond of 100 carats, together with many smaller diamonds set in a typical Russian cluster brooch.

Now a photo of this unique brooch extracted from the photos taken in 1933 at the time of inventory and valuation is seen above. The brooch was the first item in the inventory valuation list with an estimated value of 1,200,000 rubles.

We have no further information about this brooch as to its origin and when and from whom the Tsarina received it. It must be a personal gift because the large jewels and crown jewels are clearly documented in the "Diamond Fund" and are not consistent with this 100-carat single stone. Its current whereabouts are unknown.

In captivity in Siberia, in November 1917, the Tsarina decided to smuggle out some of her personal jewellery, knowing that neither property or life is certain. She is aided by
Alexei Vasilyev, a priest from Tobolsk, who gained the Tsarina's confidence. As a holy man, he is able to easily go by the guards, bringing out countless precious objects such as a gold sword belonging to Tsarvich Alexei, which was hidden in a flower box.

It turns out later that the vodka-enjoying priest retained some of the treasures for himself. Vasilyev was not alone in his greed. The writer Alexander Kirpichnikov took a pearl necklace from Grand Duchess Olga, which was later worn by his wife.

All these details are in an examination report of the Bolshevik secret police, which is well sealed in the archives of the KGB successor, the FSB.

Only in 1933, after 15 years of searching, did the Bolsheviks uncover the treasures in the basement of Vasily Kornilov. The trove consisted of eight kilograms of jewelry, including five magnificent tiaras and a 100-carat diamond set in a brooch, as seen above.

Among the personal jewels found was a crescent brooch given to Tsar Nikolai II in 1913 by the Turkish Sultan for the 300th anniversary of the enthronement of the first Romanov tsar. It's No 2 on the jewellery inventory list. It is described as a diamond crescent with five large diamonds weighing up to 70 carats and is valued at 310,000 rubles.

Included in the secret report are also photos of Kornilov and the nun Marfa Uschinzewa - the dull look of the woman gives an idea of the interrogation methods of the secret police. "At first, she denied everything," stated the Chekists firmly, "but she could not bear the Stojka." Stojka meant standing for hours on the same spot.

The nun Marfa was entrusted the jewelry in two wooden vats and two glass containers by her dying Mother Superior and sworn to God to never reveal the hiding place.
Marfa was of humble origins and she threatened to break under the load of secrecy. She eventually confided in Kornilov, for whom she cleans and cooks occasionally and finally buries the jewelry in his basement.

On her hip, Empress Alexandra Feodoronva, wears an 4 pedals, diamond clover brooch. It could be the missing four-leaf clover brooch from the Clover Leaf Egg, which Nicholas II gave to his wife on 1902 Easter.

The surprise in the egg has been lost but according to archives it is reported to be a four leaf clover with twenty three diamonds. In each of the petals was a miniature of one of the Grand Duchesses: Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia, daughters of Nicholas II and Alexandra Feodorovna.

The Empress kept the surprises apart from her Fabergé eggs. Probably lost in Tobolsk in one of the missing urns.

The gold necklace with pendant above in the picture of the Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, is another jewelry surprise from the famous Fabergé eggs, we see a medallion with a miniature of Tsarevich Alexei from the 1907 'Rose Trellis' egg.
Each of the 52 Imperial eggs had its own unique surprise.

100ct Diamant Brosche | Romanoff Juwelen und Schmuck der Zarenfamilie

Im November 1917, in Gefangenschaft in Sibirien beginnt die Zarenfamilie Teile ihres Schmucks und der Juwelen, nach draußen zu schmuggeln, voller Ahnung, dass weder Besitz noch Leben sicher sind.
Alexej Wassiljew, ein Priester aus Tobolsk, erwirbt das Vertrauen der Zarengattin: Er hilft, zahllose Pretiosen an den Wachen vorbeizubringen, ein goldenes Schwert des Zarensohns Alexej versteckt er in einem Blumenkasten.

Es stellt sich später heraus, dass der dem Wodka nicht abgeneigt heilige Mann, gänzlich Unheiliges im Schilde führt, er behält einige der Kostbarkeiten für sich.
So verfährt auch der Schreiber Alexander Kirpitschnikow, der eine Perlenkette der Zarentochter Olga an sich nimmt, mit der sich später seine Frau schmücken wird.

All diese Details stehen in einem Untersuchungsbericht der bolschewistischen Geheimpolizei, der wohlverschlossen im Archiv des KGB-Nachfolgers FSB liegt.

Erst 1933, nach 15-jähriger Suche, finden die Bolschewiki einen Teil der in Tobolsk abgezweigten Schätze im Keller des Fischhändlers Wassilij Kornilow:
acht Kilogramm Schmuck, darunter fünf prachtvolle Diademe, einen 100-karätigen Diamanten - siehe oben.

Sowie jene Halbmondbrosche, die Zar Nikolai II. 1913 vom türkischen Sultan zum 300. Jahrestag der Thronbesteigung des ersten Romanow-Zaren geschenkt bekam, sie ist in der Juwelen-Liste Nr 2. als Diamant Halbmond mit fünf grossen Diamanten bis zu 70 Karat und einem Wert von 310,000 Rubel aufgeführt.

Die Juwelen sind auf einem der Geheimdienstfotos zu sehen, von diesen stammt nun auch das Bild der einmaligen Diamantbrosche oben im Bild. Leider ist bisher nicht bekannt welchen Ursprung die Brosche hat und wann und von welcher Person die Zarin die Brosche erhielt. Es muss sich um ein persönliches Geschenk handeln, denn die grossen Schmuckstücke und Kronjuwelen sind nachvollziehbar im Fundus dokumentiert und nicht übereinstimmend mit diesem 100-karätigen Einzelstein.

Überliefert sind auch Fotos von Kornilow und der Nonne Marfa Uschinzewa - der stumpfe Blick der Frau lässt die Verhörmethoden der Geheimpolizei erahnen. "Anfangs leugnete sie alles", hielten die Tschekisten fest, "aber die Stojka hat sie nicht einen Tag ertragen." Stojka bedeutete stundenlanges Stehen auf ein und demselben Fleck.

Die Nonne Marfa hatte den Schmuck in zwei Holzbottichen und zwei Glasbehältern von ihrer sterbenden Oberin anvertraut bekommen - und bei Gott geschworen, das Versteck niemals preiszugeben.
Marfa ist aus einfacher Herkunft, sie droht unter der Last zu zerbrechen. Sie vertraut sich schließlich Kornilow an, bei dem sie gelegentlich putzt und kocht - und der den Schmuck schließlich in seinem Keller vergräbt.

Der Verbleib der einzigartigen Brosche mit dem 100-karätigen-Diamanten als Mittelpunkt, umgeben von drei Reihen unterschiedlich grossen Diamanten als Cluster gefasst ist nicht bekannt.
Der Wert wurde 1933 mit 1.200.000 Rubel taxiert, ein ungeheuerliches Vermögen und somit das kostbarste Schmuckstück aus diesem verlorenen Schatz.
