Ruby Diamond Bow Ribbon Loversknots Necklace |Crown Princess Margaret of Sweden Wedding Jewels|Royal Marriage Presents
Her Royal Highness received priceless presents at her wedding. The present of the Prince and Princess of Wales, given jointly with Louise the Duchess of Fife, the Duke of Fife, Princess Charles of Denmark (Maud), Charles Prince of Denmark and Princess Victoria of Wales, was an exquisite ruby and diamond necklace in wave design, composed of diamonds knotted in front in a true lovers knot outlined with rubies from which hung two oval diamonds pendants, also surrounded with rubies. See above.
A splendid diamond and bow brooch with a sapphire in the center was given by Mr. and Mrs Leopold de Rothschild, see on the right side.
At one of the earliest court galas, the Princess Margaret wore two of these wedding gifts. She pinned the ruby and diamond necklace with the bow and ribbons on her body, as a devante de corsage and the big diamond brooch with the sapphire as a pendant on her necklace.
It's said that Prince Sigvard owned the ruby and diamond necklace, from his mother.
from The Times, 10 June 1905
The Prince and Princess of Wales, Princess Louise (Duchess of Fife), Princess Victoria, and Prince and Princess Charles of Denmark, with the Duke of Fife, made a joint gift of a diamond necklace, harmonizing in design with the crown given by his Majesty Edward VII . It is formed of festoons and graduated daisy pendants, each festoon and each pendant being centred by a fine ruby.
The tiara in the picture is like flowers or daisies in diamonds. "Daisy" was the nickname of Crown Princess Margaret of Sweden.
The Lost Legacy: The Connaught Ruby Parure
Crafted as a wedding gift to Crown Princess Margareta of Sweden in 1905, the Connaught Ruby Tiara epitomized royal elegance. Its companion piece—an exquisite Garland Diamond Bow Ruby Necklace—completed the parure, symbolizing both opulence and lineage.
Upon Margareta’s death in 1920, the ruby jewels passed to her second son, Prince Sigvard. His marriage to commoner Erika Patzek in 1934 cost him succession rights and civil-list income. Stripped of royal stipends, Sigvard (later Count of Wisborg) faced financial ruin. In 1951, he auctioned the ruby-diamond tiara and ruby-diamond necklace at Sotheby’s New York.
The royal family’s response was swift: King Gustaf VI Adolf personally intervened, paying Sigvard to repatriate the ruby tiara. Meanwhile, Sigvard’s brother, Prince Carl Johan, raced to the auction to salvage the ruby necklace—but failed. The diamond-and-ruby garland necklace, vanished into private hands, lost to history.
Yet a bitter dispute festered. Sigvard’s family saw the tiara as a collateralized loan; the Bernadottes treated it as a permanent sale. The conflict reignited in 1973, when the dying king willed the tiara to Sigvard’s debt-ridden son, Michael. He too struck a deal: cash from King Carl XVI Gustaf in exchange for the tiara’s return to royal vaults.
Despite legal demands by Sigvard’s heirs in the 1980s, King Carl Gustaf declared the sale irrevocable. Ultimately, the tiara found sanctuary in the Bernadotte Foundation. But the necklace—a whisper of Edwardian grandeur—remains one of Europe’s great missing treasures.
