Queen Ingrid of Denmark: The Legacy of the Turquoise and Diamond Bandeau Diadem
Above, we see a photograph of Queen Ingrid of Denmark, born Princess of Sweden, adorned with the magnificent turquoise and diamond flower bandeau diadem. Crafted from gold, the diadem features 11 marguerite-like floral rosettes of decreasing sizes, each intricately set with turquoise and diamonds. The delicate craftsmanship reflects the elegance of the late 19th century, a time when such pieces were symbols of both artistry and royal heritage.
This exquisite piece was created in the late 1800s and originally belonged to Crown Princess Margareta of Sweden, Ingrid’s mother. Margareta, known for her refined taste, cherished the diadem as part of her personal collection. Following her untimely death in 1920, the diadem was passed down to her daughter, Princess Ingrid, as a confirmation gift—a poignant reminder of her mother’s legacy. Ingrid later brought it to Denmark upon her marriage to the future King Frederik IX, ensuring its place in Danish royal history.
A cherished Danish tradition, introduced by Queen Ingrid and King Frederik IX, dictates that royal daughters receive their first diadem upon turning 18. This custom, blending personal sentiment with royal protocol, was honored for all three of their daughters, who also began attending grand official events, such as gala dinners, where the diadem was to be worn. The tiara became a symbol of coming-of-age and familial bonds within the Danish royal family.
Queen Margrethe II, Ingrid’s daughter, continued this legacy, wearing the turquoise diadem until a few years ago. She often paired it with her extensive collection of turquoise jewelry, a testament to her appreciation for its historical and emotional significance. The diadem’s soft hues complemented her signature style, making it a favorite for both private and public occasions.
In keeping with tradition, Princess Isabella of Denmark was presented with this turquoise and diamond diadem as a gift from Her Majesty Queen Margrethe on the occasion of her 18th birthday, celebrated on 21 April 2025. The passing of this heirloom to a new generation underscores its enduring role as a bridge between the past and the future of the Danish monarchy. Princess Isabella’s debut wearing the diadem will undoubtedly mark another memorable chapter in its storied history.
