Lady Louise Mountbatten Queen of Sweden | Emerald Cross
The jewelled emerald cross and the matching emerald-and-diamond brooch are Hessian heirlooms. They were a wedding gift from Queen Louise’s mother, Victoria, Marchioness of Milford Haven. The origin cross was a little altered before given to Queen Louise, see on top left and later. Following Queen Louise’s death, these jewels must have passed to her maternal family line, and the emerald and diamond cross are sold in 1982.
The emerald and diamond brooch later appeared on the market and was sold at Christie’s in 1982, where it was acquired by the House of Thurn und Taxis, before being sold again approximately ten years later.
The bracelet worn on Queen Louise’s left wrist, visible in the well-known court dress portrait of Crown Princess Louise, was a gift from the citizens of Stockholm. Its present whereabouts remain unknown.
The diamond tiara with nine prongs was a wedding gift from the King and later became part of the holdings of the Bernadotte Family Foundation.
The small diamond tiara in kokoshnik design, worn on the left side, was a wedding gift from Lord and Lady Louis Mountbatten, Viceroy and Vicereine of India, the brother and sister-in-law of Queen Louise.
The diamond hair ornament with scroll motifs and a central fountain of diamonds, manufactured by Kreuter of Hanau, was later bequeathed by Queen Louise to Princess Désirée of Sweden (Mrs Niclas Silfverschiöld). When Princess Désirée married Baron Niclas Silfverschiöld in 1964, Queen Louise presented her with the diamond tiara as a wedding gift. It was worn by the bride for the Wedding Ball at the Royal Palace in Stockholm, securing its place in Swedish royal jewel history.
