The Pearl Necklace of Princess Birgitta of Sweden–Hohenzollern
The pearl necklace worn by Princess Birgitta of Sweden–Hohenzollern has a well-documented family history. The five-row necklace composed of evenly sized pearls originally belonged to her mother, Princess Sibylla of Sweden.
Initially, the necklace was strung close to the neck. In the early photographs (upper left), the diamond clasp set with a sapphire cabochon can be clearly identified. In later years, the necklace was extended in length and was worn by Princess Sibylla on important occasions (upper right).
The necklace appears in several significant family events. It is documented in photographs taken at the school graduation of her son, Carl Gustaf, the present King of Sweden, as well as at the wedding of her daughter Princess Désirée in Athens, where Princess Sibylla also wore the pearl necklace.
The necklace was subsequently worn on numerous occasions by Princess Birgitta, for example at the wedding of her brother King Carl XVI Gustaf to Silvia Sommerlath, today Queen Silvia of Sweden. In the photograph shown above, Princess Birgitta is wearing a hat, beneath which the pearl necklace is clearly visible. It appears that the necklace had by then passed into her possession.
Princess Birgitta’s daughter, Princess Désirée of Hohenzollern, was photographed on the evening of her first wedding to the Hereditary Count of Ortenburg, wearing her bridal gown together with the five-row pearl necklace, which she later adapted in 1995 by incorporating twisted pearl strands.
This version of the necklace has not been seen again. Instead, a larger single-strand pearl necklace, featuring a central sapphire element with a suspended large pearl, has been worn alternately by Princess Birgitta (notably in 1997) and Princess Désirée at major occasions. It is possible that this piece incorporates the original sapphire clasp, while the original multi-row pearl strands may no longer exist.
The photograph shown at the lower right, dated 2015, depicts Princess Désirée of Hohenzollern (Erbgräfin of Ortenburg), now Frau von Bohlen und Halbach, wearing this later pearl jewel.
Princess Sibylla of Sweden | Five-Row Pearl Necklace with Sapphire Clasp
Princess Sibylla of Sweden is shown wearing a five-row pearl necklace in the photograph at the upper left. In later years, the same necklace—composed of pearls of similar size—appears in an extended form.
Princess Birgitta of Sweden–Hohenzollern wore her mother’s pearl necklace on the occasion of the wedding of her brother, the King of Sweden, to Silvia Sommerlath, as seen in the photograph with the hat.
Princess Désirée of Hohenzollern, granddaughter of Princess Sibylla and daughter of Princess Birgitta, wore the five-row pearl necklace on the evening of her wedding.
Das Perlen Halsband von Prinzessin Birgitte von Schweden - Hohenzollern, hat eine Familien Historie. Das fünfreihige Collier mit gleichmässig grossen Perlen gehört vorher ihrer Mutter, Prinzessin Sibilla von Schweden. Die Perlenkette war zuerst halsnah aufgezogen und man kann im Bild links oben, die Diamantschliesse mit Saphircabochon gut erkennen. Später wurde die Kette verlängert und zu wichtigen Ereignissen von Prinzessin Sibylla getragen, Bild oben rechts.
Es gibt Bilder anlässlich des Schulabschlusses von ihrem Sohn, Carl Gustav, dem jetzigen König von Schweden, als auch von ihrer Tochter Desiree anlässlich der Hochzeit in Athen mit der Perlenkette.
Des öfteren wurde die Kette von Prinzessin Birgitta getragen z. b. anlässlich der Hochzeit ihres Bruders König Carl Gustav mit Silvia Sommerlath, der jetzigen Königin Silvia. Im Bild oben mit Hut, darunter die Kette. Scheinbar ging die Perlenkette in ihren Besitz über.
Ihre Tochter Prinzessin Desiree von Hohenzollern, wurde am Abend ihrer 1.Hochzeit mit dem Erbgrafen von Ortenburg, im Brautkleid und der fünfreihigen Perlenkette fotografiert und mit gedrehten Perlen, abgewandelt im Jahr 1995.
Die Perlenkette in dieser Version wurde danach nicht mehr gesehen, eine größere ein-reihige Perlenkette mit einem Saphir als Mittelpunkt und anhängender grosser Perle, wird wechselweise von der Prinzessin Birgitta 1997 und Prinzessin Desiree zu grösseren Anlässen getragen, evtl handelt es sich um diese Schliesse und die Perlen existieren nicht mehr.
