Prince George, with Princess Marina, accompanied by her parents the Princess Elena Vladimirovna and Prince Nicolas of Greece and Denmark, arrived on the 17th Sept 1934 at Balmoral Castle on a visit to the King and Queen.

The Princess had a vociferous welcome to Scotland at stopping places on the way.
In the afternoon was showery, but Prince George was able to take his fiancée for a drive through some typical Highland mountain scenery.

Thousands thronged Aberdeen railway station early this morning and gave a hearty welcome to Prince George and Princess Marina.

When the train reached the platform shortly after 7 o'clock, several minutes late, having been delayed owing to the enthusiastic scenes at King's Cross last night, there was a rush to get near the Royal coaches. The crowd had not far to go, for the first three on the train were reserved for Prince George, Princess Marina, and her parents. Until the three coaches had been detached and shunted to an adjacent platform, where the special train for Ballater was made up, there was no sign of the Royal party, but a few minutes before the train was due to leave the patience of the crowd was rewarded. Prince George and Princess Marina came to the door of one of the coaches, and instantly there was a great cheer.
The Prince presented the stationmaster, John Davidson, to the Princess, who was looking radiantly happy.

She was wearing a wine-coloured suit, with a string of pearls round her neck, a matching pearl brooch and pearl earrings. A rectangular bar-brooch is seen now pinned on her jacket, possibly an engagement gift.
Prince George was in a grey suit. As the pair stood at the door of the coach they waved to the crowd, which replied with enthusiastic bursts of cheering.

A real Highland welcome awaited Prince George and Princess Marina when they arrived at Ballater. The banner bearing the words "Welcome to Ballater," which hung across the station square, epitomized ' Welcome to Scotland," and the rousing reception obviously delighted Princess Marina.

The Duke and Duchess of York had driven from Birkhall with Princess Elizabeth to welcome Prince George and his fiancée. As soon as the carriage door opened to allow them to alight the Duke of York stepped forward and congratulated his brother (now in Highland dress) and gave Princess Marina a kiss of greeting.

The Duchess of York's welcome was particularly cordial. She gave the Princess an affectionate kiss, which was returned with warmth. But most charming of all was the greeting of little Princess Elizabeth. A little shy, she stepped forward and stood on tiptoes to kiss the Princess, who bent down and gave her an affectionate hug. After a few presentations on the station platform Princess Marina made her first appearance before the people of Ballater, and a roar of cheering went up from a thousand throats.

Princess Marina stood at the station entrance acknowledging the continuous cheering. Then from the far end of the station square arose another burst of cheers, and several hundred Ballater schoolchildren, released from their lessons, cried in unison "Welcome to Ballater! Welcome to Scotland! " This welcome delighted the Princess, and she waved her thanks to the children with a happy smile.
The Royal guard of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders came smartly to the salute, and the appearance of the soldiers was an unexpected pleasure to the Princess. It was her first glimpse at close quarters of Scottish Highlanders.

Prince and Princess Nicolas were also touched by the enthusiasm of the welcome their daughter had received. For several minutes she and Prince George stood smilingly in front of the crowd before leaving for Balmoral Castle by motor-car.

To honor the special day, Princess Nicolas, Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna wore an elegant suit and a big brooch with a sapphire cabochon, which was from the possessions of her mother the Grand Duchess Vladimir - more about the history>>

Princess Marina will not readily forget her drive from Ballater to Balmoral. At many points on the road crowds of people waved and cheered. At Crathie school the children were lined up along the side of the road, and they cheered and waved small flags as the Prince and Princess passed, the cars slowing down meanwhile.

The welcome at Balmoral was a memorable one. In front of the castle Balmoral Highlanders, in full Highland dress, with the Scottish Thistle and Oakleaf badge in their bonnets, were drawn up under the command of Major Mackenzie, the King's Commissioner. When the cars appeared through the trees the pipers, under Pipemajor Forsyth, the King's Piper, struck up the lively strains of " Hiclan' Laddie." The King and Queen then appeared on the terrace, and as the cars drew up they came out on to the lawn. The King was wearing Highland dress, and the Queen was in a cream coloured dress with toque to match. Their Majesties warmly welcomed Princess Marina and her parents, and afterwards the King presented his Commissioner to the Princess.
Then followed an enthusiastic scene. Major Mackenzie turned to the Balmoral Highlanders and called for three cheers for Princess Marina. The cheers were right lustily given, and Princess Marina was obviously greatly pleased with the picturesque appearance of the stalwart Highlanders, and she bowed and smiled her thanks for the warmth of the welcome they gave her.
