Diamond Kokoshnik of Helena Vladimirovna | Chaumet Tiara Princess Olga of Greece

Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna was the only daughter of Grand Duchess Vladimir, one of the unbelievably rich Romanovs, and owner of the largest and finest jewel collection of all time. Grand Duchess Vladimir was frequent customer at Cartier and Chaumet. The jewel might have been a wedding gift to Princess Elena from her mother.

In the picture above, on the left, is Princess Nicholas of Greece, as she was known after her marriage, wearing the tiara, together with a large diamond bow-brooch, Tsar Nicholas II gave Helen for her own wedding. Princess Marina of Kent received this item later, from her mother.

The diamond-set framework is filled with filigree motifs climbing upward and down. A series of large pearl-drop diamonds graduated to the centre are suspended from the frame. Each movement of the wearer sets the suspended diamonds in motion, reflecting the light in a dazzling way. A large diamond cluster dominates the centre.

Princess Nicholas of Greece, gave to her daugther Princess Olga, Princess Paul of Yugoslavia,as a wedding gift.

In the centre picture (and the larger detail below) Princess Olga wears the complete tiara. In the picture on the right, taken in Athens in 1962, the hanging diamond drops have more space, the distance of the frame is higher. This is the last known picture of this tiara.

Princess Maria Maria-Pia of Savoy wore the tiara (probably on loan) on the occasion of the wedding of King Baudouin of Belgium with Queen Fabiola in 1960, also with the diamond drops missing.

The tiara’s current whereabouts are unknown.

The Kokoschnik, with its gently undulating form cresting at the centre, creates the illusion of a halo circling the head of a Byzantine Madonna. The name Kokoschnik comes from the Russian "kokosch", a form of headwear worn in traditional Russian folk dancing. Originally of simple design and form, and made from plain materials, the headwear became more elaborate in the 16th and 17th century, adopting the form of a stiff halo made from a variety of textiles, overlaid with sparkling ornaments ranging from the humble sequin to the most precious gemstones.

The Kokoschnik became fashionable in Western Europe after 1800, being referred to as Russian tiara or “tiare a la russe”. The Kokoschnik form remained popular in England longer than in France, and versions were often seen there as late as 1937.

In the year 2020, Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia, uncovered surprising revelations about his family's jewelry, while researching his publication. 'On the cover of the book, my grandmother wears an amazing tiara that we always thought to be from Cartier,' he says. It is the fine diamond tiara kokoshnik, above!

'After further research they discovered that when Grand Duchess Vladimir was in Paris on one of her visits to Cartier to order things she had the tiara with her and asked them if they could repair it as it was damaged. According to the Cartier Archives they did repair it but it was actually a Chaumet tiara!'
