Irene (Irini) Princess of Greece married in 1939 Duke Aimone di Savoia
(1900-1948), Duke of Spoleto, 4th Duke of Aosta, later King Tomislav
II of Croatia, member of the House of Savoy.
Above she wears a diamond tiara onced owned by her mother Sophie, the
Queen of Greece, born a Princess of Prussia.
According to Christies, this tiara which was auctioned in 1979 was
the gift of Queen Victoria to her eldest daughter, the Princess Royal,
upon her marriage to Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia in 1858.
In Queen Victoria's diary, as well as in the list of Victoria Princess Royal's gifts found in The Times mention:
"a diamond “corsage” to be worn as a necklace or head ornament from the Queen">>
The Empress Friedrich wrote about the tiara in a letter to her daugher Sophie Crown Princess of Greece:
"Emma* gave me your message that you thought you had fewer jewels than the others at the wedding. I cannot quite agree, you may have fewer diamond brooches but such a set of turquoise as you have very people possess, and also such a set of rubies, and the diamond diadem I gave you is very valuable as the stones are old. Cape diamonds may be much more effective and large and showy, but not so good and fine. Indeed I wish I had more to give you, but you must wait until I die, or am older and need no longer wear jewels, then I can give you a few more, and be pleased to see them on your dear neck."
*[one of the Empress' personal maids whom she had sent to London to look after her daughter, who was attending Princess Maud of Wales' wedding]
On top right side, in the picture Irene Duchess of Aoste wore a fleur-de-lys diamond brooch, it was left to her from her mother-in-law, the Duchess Helene of Aoste, it was the Florence giglio, the wedding gift from ladies of Florence.
She wore the brooch, as her brother, crown prince Paul wedds in 1938 and her niece princess Sophia's christening in the same year.
In 1961 Princess Irene wore the Fleur de lys giglio - brooch at her brother's 60th birthday gala in Athens and two years later the piece was seen in London at the wedding of her cousin's daughter, Alexandra of Kent.
Finally, Princess Irene wore the Fleur de lys giglio - brooch in 1964 in Sintra, Portugal at her son's wedding with princess Claudia d’Orléans.
