The Princess Royal's Gothic Tiara- Enamel,Sapphire,Citrine and Diamond Arts and Crafts Diadem

The Princess Royal, Countess of Harewood owned an Arts and Crafts tiara which was sold at the first auction of her jewellery in 1966. Lot no 92 was described as:

 

"A Gem, Enamel and Gold Head Ornament, composed of five graduated gold and enamel Gothic arches supported on similarly decorated pillars each enclosing a stylized tree set with sapphires and small diamond collets, the tapering base enamelled with leaves and berries with six graduated red enamelled bosses at regular intervals, and with a drop-shaped topaz quartz mounted in the centre."

It sold for £462 or $165 (USD) to Drager. At the time, very little was known about the designer and manufacturer of the tiara. Now this is no longer the case, thanks to the research done by Paul Atterbury and John Benjamin, noted British jewellery experts.

In their book, "Arts and Crafts to Art Deco: The Jewellery and Silver of H.G. Murphy", they explore the life and output of Harry Murphy (1884-1939), an English designer, goldsmith and silversmith. In around 1898,he apprenticed to Henry Wilson who was probably England's greatest teacher and mentor of young talent in the Arts and Crafts tradition, for six years. Harry was launched on his career, ultimately opening his own retail premises, the Falcon Studio, in 1928.

"In around 1922 Murphy received one of his most significant commissions: a tiara in gold, enamel and gems to be worn by Mary, the Princess Royal, to mark the occasion of her betrothal to the Earl of Harewood.
Considering the importance of this commission—by Royal Command from Queen Mary, the Princess Royal's mother—it is surprising just how little information exists in the Murphy family archive. It should also be said that the present (sic) Earl of Harewood (the 7th Earl Harewood 1923-2011) does not recollect the piece in question. What there is extends to the original working diagram in black ink, pencil and gold leaf together with the black and white photograph of the completed tiara in its fitted case. This photograph is annotated on the back 'designed and made by H.G. Murphy for Princess Royal'. The tiara itself now forms part of a private collection in America where, perhaps unsurprisingly considering the striking comparisons, it has been attributed to Henry Wilson."

"Fashioned as a series of Gothic arches in architectural formation, the framework is enamelled in blue and green with the design of simple foliate sprays decorated with apricot enamel buds and, at intervals, red enamel bosses. Contained within each arch is a 'Tree of Life' motif—Murphy's trademark device—each set with round-cut sapphires and brilliant-cut diamonds in cut-down millegrain collets.
The lower gallery is set at the centre with a pear-shaped golden citrine and the pillar-like divisions and arches are further decorated with matching enamel highlights. The overall design of the piece contains elements of Henry Wilson's 'Diana' tiara of 1909 and Wilson's celebrated 'Orpheus' tiara presented by the Llewelyn Smith family to the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths."

In 2005, the tiara was part of a private American collection, the Sataloff and Cluchey Collection. Dr. Joseph "Joe" Sataloff (1919 - 2008) was a professor of otolaryngology at Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia.

"Joe Sataloff was also recognized internationally as a collector of and expert on antique jewelry, a subject on which he published two books, including a definitive work on Art Nouveau jewelry, his area of greatest interest." His collection has been displayed and some pieces have been donated to the Philadelphia and Boston Museums of Art and the Smithsonian.

 

The current whereabouts of the tiara is unknown.

Prinzessin Royals | Jugendstil Saphir Citrine Email Gotik Diadem Royaler Saphirschmuck

Das Jugendstil Diadem von Prinzessin Mary ist ein mit Bäumen und Blättern verzierter Goldreif in grünem und aprikosefarbenem Email. Im Basisreif ist ein tropfenförmiger Edelstein als Mittelpunkt gefasst - aus dem ein "Lebensbaum "entspringt". Grün und blau emaillierte Arcaden werden von Säulenornamenten getragen, die ebenfalls in grün und blau emailliert sind. Das Blattwerk erinnert stark an die Arbeiten der Wiener Secession. Die Wiener Secession ist eine Vereinigung bildender Künstler in Wien aus der Zeit des Fin de siècle. Davon abgeleitet wird auch die Wiener Variante des Jugendstils als Secessionsstil oder Wiener Jugendstil bezeichnet.

 

Die Prinzessin Royal, Gräfin von Harewood, besaß eine Arts and Crafts-Tiara, die 1966 bei der ersten Versteigerung ihres Schmucks verkauft wurde.

Lot Nr. 92 wurde beschrieben als:

"Ein Edelstein, Emaille und Gold Haar Ornament, bestehend aus fünf abgestuften gotischen Bögen auf ähnlich geschmückten Säulen aufgesetzt alles aus Gold und Emaille, mittig jeweils einen stilisierten Baum mit Saphiren und kleinen Diamanten, die verjüngende Basis emailliert mit Blättern und Beeren. Von sechs abgestuft rot emailliert Bögen in regelmäßigen Abständen überdacht, mit einem tropfenförmigen Topaz-Quarz in der Mitte des Reifs montiert."

Die Tiara selbst gehört heute zu einer Privatsammlung in Amerika, wo Henry Wilson, vielleicht in Anbetracht der auffälligen Vergleiche, nicht überrascht wurde. "

"Geformt als eine Reihe von gotischen Bögen in architektonischer Formation, ist das Rahmenwerk in blau und grün emailliert mit dem Design von einfachen Blattanordnngen mit Aprikosen Emaille Knospen und in Abständen roten Emaille Bosse verziert. Enthält in jedem Bogen ist ein 'Baum des Lebens' Motiv - Murphys Markenzeichen - jeweils besetzt mit rund geschliffenen Saphiren und Brillanten in geschnittenen Millegrain-Fassungen.
Die untere Galerie befindet sich in der Mitte mit einem birnenförmigen goldenen Citrin und die säulenartigen Einteilungen und Bögen sind mit passenden Emaille-Highlights verziert. Das Gesamtdesign des Stücks enthält Elemente von Henry Wilsons "Diana" Tiara von 1909 und Wilsons gefeierte "Orpheus" Tiara, die von der Llewelyn Smith Familie der Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths präsentiert wurde. "
