A large aristocratic congregation assembled at St George’s, Hanover Square, London, to witness the wedding of the Earl of Airlie and Lady Mabel Gore, eldest daughter of the Earl of Arran of Castle Gore, County Mayo. The ceremony took place at eleven o’clock and the church was crowded.
Among the guests were H.R.H. the Prince of Wales and Prince Edward, the Duke and Duchess of Bedford, the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, Lord and Lady Ashburton, the Countess of Airlie, the Duke and Duchess of Leeds, the Marquis and Marchioness of Stafford, the Marchioness of Tavistock, the Marchioness of Tweeddale, the Earl and Countess of Mayo, Lord and Lady Rosebery, Lord and Lady Ruthven, Lord and Lady Leconfield, Lord and Lady Dorchester, the Earl and Countess of Galloway, and many other members of the aristocracy.
The bride was given away by her father. A number of non-commissioned officers of the 10th Hussars (the bridegroom’s regiment) lined the central aisle as a guard of honour. Captain Fisher, 10th Hussars, acted as best man.
The bride wore a magnificent gown of wavy duchess satin, elaborately trimmed with point lace, looped with sprays of orange blossom, and a tulle veil surmounted by a wreath of orange blossom, The report does not state specific jewellery she wore at the ceremony. The bridesmaids included Lady Alice and Lady Esther Gore (the bride’s sisters), Lady Ogilvy and Lady Griselda Ogilvy (relations of the bridegroom), the Hon. Beatrix [—], Miss Frances Mitford, Miss Ives Mitford, and Miss Katharine Hosier. The bridesmaids were dressed in white ottoman trimmed with gold, with gold-embroidered jackets and white felt bonnets trimmed with white velvet. Each wore a diamond initial brooch given by the bridegroom.
After the ceremony the wedding party went to the town house of the bride’s uncle, Lord Mount Temple, Great Stanhope Street, where the bridal breakfast was served. Contrary to usual custom, the bride and bridegroom did not sit down at the breakfast but left town immediately after the ceremony for Howard, Yorkshire, en route to Cortachy Castle for part of their honeymoon. The bride’s travelling dress was grey velvet with matching cloak and bonnet.
REJOICINGS ON THE AIRLIE ESTATES
Great rejoicings took place across the Airlie estates. Tenants and others prepared materials for bonfires and celebrations. The tenantry and estate employees were entertained to dinner at several centres (the Drill Hall, Cortachy; Cortachy Castle; Glenisla Hotel; and other local venues). Flags and banners flew, and at eleven o’clock cannon were fired from the hill in front of Cortachy Castle (the cannon brought from Cluny Castle). The Drill Hall at Cortachy was decorated with evergreens and banners; a semi-circular motto bore the monogram “M.A.” under a coronet and the word “Welcome.”
Captain Hozier sent a telegram announcing the marriage and that the Prince of Wales and Prince Edward were present; Cortachy replied with hearty congratulations and said they had drunk the couple’s health. At the public proceedings the chairman proposed the health of the Earl and Countess of Airlie; in his speech he praised the Earl’s military career — service in India during the Afghan campaign, presence at the battle of Tamai, and his recent engagement with Sir Herbert Stewart’s force at Abu Klea and elsewhere, where he was wounded. The speech noted the Earl’s diligence and promotion in the army and that he had recently attended the School of Musketry.
The Airlie Pearl and Diamond Tiara
The tiara is set throughout with cushion-shaped, old brilliant and rose-cut diamonds, the pierced tapered form decorated with daisies, each centrally featuring a 5.1-9.4mm pearl, with cushion-shaped diamond ivy leaves, adorned by alternating 4.0-8.0mm pearls and clovers across the crest, coming to a central apex with a 9.6mm natural pearl, cushion-shaped and old brilliant-cut diamonds approx. 34.75 carats total, inner diameter 15.4cm, cased by R&S Garrard & Co., 25 Haymarket, London, the two principal pearls are both natural, saltwater.
The Airlie tiara was first pictured on the Late Dowager‘s grandmother-in-law, Mabell, who wore in her official portrait, in 1932. Mabell had been the Lady of the Bedchamber to her old friend, Queen Mary (as the then Duchess of York) in December 1901. On the accession of King George V in 1910, Mabell was retained at court as a Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Mary.
By 1901, the coronation of Edward VII created a flurry of interest and demand for tiaras. At this time there was a transition between the traditional 19th century silver and gold mounts and the finely worked platinum settings which came to dominate the first decades of the 20th century. Not long thereafter, in 1910, the demand for tiaras surged again with the next coronation, that of King George V.
The Airlie Tiara was made towards the end of the 19th century and was first worn by Mabell, Countess of Airlie.
The presence of daisies and ivy in this tiara, accompanied by pearls, could suggest a gift for a bride. In the ‘Language of Flowers’, a daisy represents innocence, loyal love and purity while ivy is believed to be “an aid to love”. The wedding gift from Lord Airlie to Mabell in the year 1886 is noted as some costley jewels, without details . It could probably this daisies and ivy tiara.
In 1901 she was made Lady of the Bedchamber to the then Princess of Wales, later to become Queen Mary.Latterly the Airlie Tiara was regularly seen worn by Mabell's granddaughter-in-law, Virginia Fortune Ryan Ogilvy, Countess of Airlie, in particular in her role as Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Elizabeth II. Virginia Ogilvy had the unique distinction of being the first ever American-born Lady in Waiting to a British monarch. She held this role from 1973 until the death of Queen Elizabeth in 2022.
The Airlie Tiara was worn with a high degree of regularity. It could be seen at numerous State Openings of Parliament, official overseas visits, State Banquets and Gala Receptions at Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace, amongst other high profile events.
The Pearl and Diamond Tiara of The Late Dowager Countess of Airlie is about to be auctioned. The spectacular Airlie Tiara will be sold in London by Lyon & Turnbull on October 22, 2025, and it will be estimated between £50,000 and £70,000.
Countess Virginia was the sister-in-law of Angus Ogilvy, husband of Princess Alexandra. The Late Dowager became the first American to served as a Lady of the Bedchamber to the British Monarch in 1973. She remained in the position until the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022. The Dowager Countess of Airlie died in Cortachy on 16 August 2024, aged 91. The Dowager was following in the footsteps of her husband, David's grandmother, Mabell.
