Lady Reading is the wife of Lord Reading, P.C., G.C.B., K.C.V.O., who became Lord Chief Justice in 1913, and was recently appointed Viceroy of India. The daughter of Mr. Albert Cohen, she married Lord Reading, then Mr. Rufus Isaacs, in 1887, and has one son. Viscount Erleigh. Lady Reading, who is a Dame of the British Empire, has been studying the problems of the women in India, and hopes to be a help to them. She is a charming woman, and when in America as Ambassadress; in 1918-19, was universally loved and admired by Society in Washington. ....Certainly the requirements of viceregal protocol were not as dis tasteful to Lady Reading as they were to her successor Lady Irwin. At large dinner-parties guests would be brought up by an A.D.C. in the state drawing-room for a few minutes’ talk with the Viceroy and Vicereine individually in the manner of royalty, for after all they were the official representatives of the King-Emperor and the Queen. But it was a boring and often trying procedure, which the Irwins were later able to drop without apparent loss of ‘face’. Neither Viceroy nor Vicereine could, of course, leave the grounds even for the shortest walk without a considerable escort. Lady Reading’s shopping expeditions to the Simla bazaars were remarkable. Preceded by two members of the Viceroy’s Bodyguard, a victoria and pair - with two servants dressed in scarlet and gold on the box in front and two more standing behind - conveyed Her Excellency where she wished to go, being followed by the A.D.C.-in-waiting in a buggy, while the rear of this impressive cavalcade was brought up by two more members of the Bodyguard. The first of the Native Princes whom the Viceroy met was perhaps the most deplorable, the Maharaja of Alwar, a sadist and a pervert, who claimed descent from the Sun God. ‘Alwar is at present staying with me and I have had much conversation with him,’ Reading wrote to Montagu on July 21. ‘He is undoubtedly clever and attractive but rather baffling. I usually arrive at rapid conclusions with regard to any individual with whom I am brought into personal contact, and yet I confess that I am not able to arrive at a complete estimate of Alwar. That he is a most interesting individual and full of ideas and intelligent reasoning there is of course no doubt. ... His visit was in consequence of a letter to me informing me that he wished to see me on several matters and was coming to Simla. I then of course invited him to stay. He is spending four days here. ’ The Maharaja was concerned about two matters in particular. The first was that the Viceroy alone as the King-Emperor’s representative rather than the Viceroy and his Council should deal with the Ruling Princes. The second was that he had heard that the statute which made it a criminal offence ‘to cause disaffection or hatred of the Government of a Ruling Prince’ was to be repealed. Reading was able to satisfy him on both matters, pointing out as to the first that only in exceptional circumstances, such as where the succession to the throne of a Native State was involved, did he consult the Council ; and, as to the second, that he considered that serious cases would still be governed by the general Indian Penal Code. The visit to Kashmir set the pattern for the Viceroy’s State visits to other Native States, of which he paid upwards of twenty during his term of office. Besides the change of scene, they provided him with some sport, so that his clay-pigeon shooting practice in London was worthwhile. He got his first tiger when staying with the Maharaja Scindia of Gwalior, a source of much satisfaction to him, and in Mysore he took part in a thrilling keddah, or wild elephant hunt. Besides the Maharaja Scindia, his particular friends among the Native Princes were Bikaner, Patiala, and the Jam Singh of Nawanagar, best known for his cricketing prowess as ‘Ranji’. In two days of grouse shooting in Bikaner, which he visited for the first time immediately after Christmas, 1921, Reading brought down a hundred birds in two days, and he also shot a few chinkaras (buck gazelle). As he told Montagu, ‘it was great fun there, although there was a huge party but it didn’t really interfere with us. My wife also enjoyed it very much. . . .’ Their host, Sir Ganga Singh, Maharaja of Bikaner, was perhaps the most distinguished of the Princes both in personal appearance and achievements. It was mainly at his instigation that the annual conference of native rulers developed into the Chamber of Princes, of which he became the first Chancellor in the year of Reading’s arrival in India. But even this amiable Maharaja was not free from the taint of snobbery, as was evident from his behaviour when he entertained the Readings’ successors. On this occasion he told Lady Irwin ‘how nice it had been that Lady Reading had enjoyed India so much. She had positively radiated happiness, but it was perhaps a pity that she had eaten cheese on her knife.’ The Viceroy was also expected to keep in close personal touch. Alice Edith Isaacs, Marchioness of Reading née Cohen; 1866 – 1930 was the first wife of Rufus Isaacs, 1st Marquess of Reading, and a prominent philanthropist in colonial India. Her husband served as Viceroy and Governor-General of India, making her the Vicereine. Alice Isaacs was born in London to a Jewish family. She was the third daughter of Albert Cohen, a merchant in the City of London, and his wife, Elizabeth. She married Rufus Isaacs, then a newly qualified barrister, on 8 December 1887. He had considered being a stockbroker but his wife encouraged him to pursue a career in law. He was ultimately Solicitor-General, Attorney-General and Lord Chief Justice. Her title successively changed from Mrs Isaacs to Lady Isaacs on her husband's knighthood in 1910, Baroness Reading on his ennoblement in 1914, Viscountess Reading in 1916, the Countess of Reading in 1917, and finally the Marchioness of Reading in 1926. In 1921, Lord Reading was appointed Viceroy of India. He was reluctant to accept, as his wife's health was delicate, but she persuaded him. She accompanied him to India and, despite continuing poor health, served prominently as Viceregal Consort. She also threw herself into charitable work, particularly with Indian women and children. She established the Women of India Fund in 1921 and National Baby Week in 1923, as well as supporting many existing charities. In 1926 she campaigned to construct a standard hospital in Peshawar, in place of Agerton Hospital. The new hospital was subsequently named as Lady Reading Hospital. Later, upon the retirement of her husband in 1926, they returned to England. She was appointed Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) in the 1920 civilian war honours and Companion of the Order of the Crown of India on 14 March 1921,[4] the latter being a traditional honour for the Vicereine of India. She was awarded the Kaiser-i-Hind Medal in gold in 1924. She died of cancer in 1930, aged 64.
