Its floral design is composed of five masterfully crafted five fuchsias and eight smaller flowers of carnations , all arranged amongst diamond leaves, flowers that symbolise love and dedication. Part of the Family Collection: It belongs to a larger parure of family jewels, which also includes a large diamond rivière (necklace), matching large pear-shaped diamond earrings, and a large diamond cross. Tradition: The tiara has traditionally been worn by all Duchesses of Rutland. Furthermore, it serves as the bridal tiara for the daughters of the house, the "Ladies Manners." A well-known historical photograph from 1891 shows Janetta, Duchess of Rutland, wearing the tiara. The Duchesses of Rutland since the Title's Creation The title "Duke of Rutland" was created in 1703. High Society Celebrates the Wedding of Lady Violet Manners and Viscount Garnock The wedding of Lady Violet Manners, eldest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland, to William James Lindesay-Bethune, son and heir of the 16th Earl of Lindsay, was a grand affair that brought together two of Britain’s most illustrious families. The ceremony took place at the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Bottesford, followed by celebrations at the historic Belvoir Castle. The guest list read like a roll call of the aristocracy, but the true star of the evening was the Rutland Tiara, a breathtaking heirloom with a storied past. The Bride’s Ensemble The bride, now Viscountess Garnock, chose a stunning gown by Phillipa Lepley, the designer behind the wedding dress of the groom’s sister, Lady Charlotte Lindesay-Bethune, for her marriage to Prince Jamie of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. The dress, with its mermaid silhouette and celestial décolletage, was a vision of elegance as Lady Violet arrived in a carriage to greet her guests. The Rutland Tiara: A Symbol of Legacy All eyes, however, were drawn to the Rutland Tiara, a masterpiece of craftsmanship featuring diamond carnations and fuchsias—flowers symbolizing love and devotion. The tiara’s history dates back to the 18th century, and its first documented wearer was Janetta, the 7th Duchess of Rutland, who was painted wearing it in the late 1800s. It later passed to her successor, Violet, the 8th Duchess of Rutland, after whom the bride is named. Though Violet herself was rarely depicted in the tiara, she lent it to her daughter, Diana Cooper (later Viscountess Norwich), for a iconic 1937 Vogue photoshoot by Cecil Beaton. A Tiara’s Brush with History The tiara’s survival through the Blitz is a testament to the bravery of Lady Ursula D’Abo, daughter of Kathleen, the 9th Duchess of Rutland. In her memoir, The Girl with the Widow’s Peak, Lady Ursula recounted how she defied her mother to rescue the tiara from wartime destruction, enlisting Lord Beaverbrook’s help to transport it to safety at Carrington’s in Regent’s Street. Notable Appearances Kathleen wore the tiara at the 1937 Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, where she served as a Canopy Bearer. Later, Frances, the 10th Duchess of Rutland, selected it for the coming-out ball of her husband’s niece, Lindy Guinness, and wore it to the 1960 State Opening of Parliament. The tiara also graced high-society gatherings, including a glittering party at Lady Pamela Hicks’s Britwell House, attended by European royalty and British nobility. A Modern Revival The 11.
