The duck-egg sized sapphire worn in a choker, was a wedding gift from Elizabeth the Queen Mother, to Princess Diana in 1981.
The Queen Mother gave Lady Diana Spencer, this enormous sapphire brooch as a wedding present. Diana had the brooch placed later, as the centerpiece of a seven strand pearl necklace.
Queen Mum ownes two similar sapphire clusters, but they seem to have never worn them and reserved them for a future Princess of Wales as a wedding gift.
It was probably part of the Greville legacy and could possibly have bought from Hennell after the death of the Empress Marie Feodorovna of Russia, because such a jewel, was also available under No. 44 on the list of the imperial jewels, included.
A possible Romanov provenance would also underline the importance of a rather common type of brooch.
44. large oval brooch with sapphire surrounded by diamonds (GBP 2500-3000) sold 7/4/29 no price listed
The price in 1929 is still absolutely substantial and it must have been a top gem.
The brooch by Diana is also not typical of the same English type, which are based on the Prince Albert sapphire brooch, but also has the typical inner frame made of smaller diamonds, as the Russian pieces have.
