A newly created Kingdom, Greece had no jewelry collection at disposal of the new Queen. Fossin et Fils was commissioned to create a new set of Greek Crown Jewels. Modeled after the Bavarian Crown Jewels, the new Crown was made of gold with no precious gems - and was never used by the King. In 1862 Otto was deposed and took the Crown Jewels with him back to Bavaria King of the Hellenes Because of Greek royal jewels meant that the Queen had to rely on new commissions, gifts and family heirlooms to create her collection - and so she did In the beautiful portrait by Joseph Karl Stieler the Queen wears a large floral tiara with important diamonds, long earrings, a diamond rivičre and diamond and pearl brooches. A diamond star parure belonged to Queen Amalia of Greece, Princess of Bavaria,born Princess Amalie of Oldenburg.
A Fringe necklace of graduated old-mine cut diamonds with a central diamond cluster pendant, a pair of ear pendants, ech set with old-mine cut diamonds with a diamond cluster top and three diamond- set sunburst brooches, the brooch os Sevigne design, a pair of small single stone earrings and a single pearl and diamond pendant, mounted in silver and gold, made by Fossin,Paris.

Sold privately probably from King Otto in Exil, to Count Maximilian Arco-Zinneberg, son of Archduchess Maria-Leopoldine widow of Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria, then given as a wedding gift to Countess Mathilde Wolf-Metternicht zur Gracht, his daughter-in-law 1867.

 

Sold at Sotheby's, Gen, 17 May 1995, lot 173, the diamond jewels from Queen Amalia would be auctioned again at Christe’s in 2014.Now in the Al Thani Collcetion.

Amalia basilissa tes Hellados Die königlichen Balltoiletten übertrafen alles, was man in Athen bis anhin gesehen hatte. Frau von Nordenflycht beschreibt diese, so zum Beispiel für eine "tanzende Soirée: Ein weißes Tüllkleid und gleiche Tunika, beide mit Garnierungen von Federn; eine einzige Feder auf dem Kopf, malerisch von da auf Hals und Brust herunterspielend - über die Stirn eine Reihe Diamanten, die Feder auch von einem Juwelenbouquet gehalten, ebenfalls auf den Schultern Diamantagraffen und mit solchen auch das Korsett bis auf den Gürtel hinab geschmückt."
Otto King of Greece son ot King Ludwig I of Bavaria reigned in Greece from 1833-1862. Because of a military revolt he was forced to abdicate in 1862 and set up residence in Bamberg,Bavara. From there he and Queen Amelia supported the monarchist movment in Greece. Notably the support of Greeks in Crete drained personal resources and it was possible around 1865 that this diamond star parure was sold.

 

 

Source: Sotheby's; Neue Heimat Griechenland Briefe der Oberhofdame Julie von Nordenflycht, Sie wurden bereits 1845 in Leipzig veröffentlicht. Frau von Nordenflycht korrespondierte von 1837 bis zu ihrem Tod 1842. Auch ihre Nachfolgerin am Hof, Wilhelmine von Plüskow, schrieb.
