Diamond Star Tiara | Wedding Diadem of Princess Sophie of Bavaria| Duchess of Arenberg Royal Jewels Bayern Schmuck Juwelen Haus Wittelsbach
The Wittelsbach wedding, which featured a bride Sophie, was a momentous occasion described by the local newspaper as "the grandest princely wedding in the Wittelsbach dynasty since the 2nd war and likely the most extravagant affair Berchtesgaden has ever witnessed."
On January 20, 1955, Princess Sophie of Bavaria, the youngest daughter of Crown Prince Rupprecht, and Jean-Engelbert von Arenberg were united in matrimony at the collegiate church. The Archbishop of Munich, Dr. Joseph Cardinal Wendel, officiated the ceremony.
The bride wore a large diamond star tiara as wedding jewel vom the Bavarian Royal House, see above in the picture
....it was later sold with three stars!!!.Diadem from the treasures of the Bavarian royal family, Vienna around 1880. From V. Mayers's sons in gold. Three ten-pointed stars mounted at regular intervals on a simple circlet, the middle one somewhat larger. All rays set with a pave of larger and smaller old-cut brilliants, in the center of each star a large round old-cut brilliant. The 138 diamonds together weigh around 20 carats. The stars are detachable and can be worn as individual broochesThe press coverage at the time vividly depicted the event: "Berchtesgaden has not witnessed revelries of such magnitude in the Wittelsbach lineage for a considerable time. No words can adequately describe the awe-inspiring festivities! It was a genuinely regal celebration, steeped in ancestral traditions and courtly rituals, yet contemporary in its elegant simplicity. Moreover, it served as a splendid demonstration of the people of Berchtesgaden's unwavering loyalty to their homeland. The Santa Claus delivered resounding greetings, and the entire population expressed heartfelt sympathy. Once again, it was evident that the royal family's popularity remained undiminished. Everyone participated joyfully, contributing to the dignified proceedings and exemplifying traditional loyalty and admiration for the aged Crown Prince Rupprecht, the epitome of the Bavarian spirit of home, who stood as the bride's father on this occasion. Berchtesgaden, in doing so, honored itself."
A total of 75 "princes" graced the occasion, with Crown Prince Rupprecht and his immediate family residing in the royal palace. The press and photo reporters, numbering 15, occupied one of the prominent hotels in Berchtesgaden. The wedding festivities commenced on January 18th at 12:15 p.m. with the civil ceremony officiated by Dr. Stefan Imhof, the 1st Mayor. This was followed by a small luncheon for a select group. On the eve of the church wedding, the Crown Prince hosted a grand evening reception at 8:30 p.m., attended by guests from princely households and Cardinal Wendel.
The day of the church wedding began with the traditional Berchtesgaden Christmas archer custom of awakening the bride. At 7 a.m., the "Markerer" fired a shot to signify the bride's awakening in the courtyard garden, while the "Stanggasser" fired for the groom at the Hotel Geiger.
For the church wedding at 11 a.m. in the collegiate church, the "Berchtesgadener Anzeiger" provided details about the bride's attire: a white organza dress with a historical, light blue, silver-embroidered silk train, complemented by a white ermine jacket and a bouquet of dewy white roses adorning her chest.
Cardinal Wendel conducted the ceremony donning the historic Maria Theresa regalia of the collegiate church. HH Pastor Schüller served as presbyter assistens during the wedding mass, with HH Chaplain Gillhuber and Father Gundekar from Munich acting as Honorary Levites. It was customary to have a Capuchin priest present at every wedding in the Arenberg house due to an ancient tradition. Centuries ago, when the Arenberg family faced extinction in the male line, the Pope granted a release to a Capuchin from the Arenberg house, allowing him to establish a family. The wedding ceremony was accompanied by approximately 100 singers from the Stiftskirche choir and the Liedertafel, along with instrumentalists.
