The Duchess of Kent’s Diamond Edelweiss Brooch | Ship launch of World Harmony Tanker | British Royal JewelsIn February 1954, Sunderland and the shipyards of the Tyne became the setting for an unusual jewel story. When the Duchess of Kent, Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, launched the World Harmony—at that time the largest oil tanker ever built in Britain—the event was more than a triumph of engineering. It was also a celebration of civic pride and craftsmanship, witnessed by thousands of workers, naval officers, schoolchildren, and dignitaries. At the heart of the ceremony, the directors of Vickers–Armstrongs presented the Duchess with a brooch to mark the occasion. Sir Ronald Weeks, the chairman, spoke warmly of the skill of the men and women who had built the great vessel, while the Duchess, visibly moved, accepted the jewel as a symbol of gratitude and remembrance. In her reply, she underlined how profoundly stirring such a launch could be: a ship carrying not only cargo but also the hopes and labour of thousands. This brooch became a quiet yet powerful emblem of the Duchess’s life of service. Marina wore it often until her death in August 1968, making it one of her most visible jewels in the later years of her public role. A Jewel Passed Through Generations After her passing, the jewel entered the collection of her daughter-in-law, Katherine, who had married Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, in June 1961. Katherine, Duchess of Kent, gave the brooch a prominent role in her own jewel repertoire, wearing it regularly at official occasions and family events, ensuring that its story did not end with one generation. Thus, what began as a token of thanks from the Tyneside shipbuilders—an industrial jewel for a royal patron—became a living family heirloom. Its long and visible life on the Duchess of Kent, and later on Katherine, demonstrates the power of such gifts: not merely decorative, but symbolic of service, continuity, and the bonds between Crown, community, and family.
Duchess of Kent appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Dorset Regiment in the Queen’s Birthday Honours year to make her first visit to the regimental depot at Dorchester on March 20 Details of the programme have not yet been approved by the Duchess but one main reason for the to her an opportunity io receive from the regiment the gift a regimental brooch in diamonds.
