In 1968, Marina Duchess of Kent surprised the public with a new and previously unseen jewel at her appearance connected with the Wimbledon prize ceremony. She wore an elegant set of four shell brooches, each of a different size, executed in a naturalistic seashell design.
Importantly, these brooches were not set with rubies, despite later claims. They are not ruby jewels, nor are they related to the well known Russian ruby cluster jewels from her Greek parure. The shells are sculptural and organic in form, relying on design rather than gemstones for their impact.
This appearance is especially poignant, as it belongs to the final months of her life. Marina Duchess of Kent died in August 1968, making this shell brooch set one of her last new jewellery statements in public.
