She was married with great pomp to Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia, grandson and eventual heir of the German Kaiser, Wilhelm II. There were three wedding ceremonies (see the pictures of the party at Cecilienhof, Potsdam and Haus Doorn, Netherlands above) to mark the alliance between the Romanov and Hohenzollern dynasties.
"The trousseau for the Grand Duchess Kira of Russia has been made in Paris by Schiaparelli, but at her wedding, she will wear the silver lame dress in which her grandmother, Grand Duchess Marie, was married to the Duke of Edinburgh. This dress, which has required no alteration to fit the present bride, has been kept at Coburg for the past 80 years and with it will go along veil of old lace and a simple diadem". This was the story of the Fashion Correspondent of the time which sent the story from Paris.
But this is not true, I asked Duchess Marie Cécile of Oldenburg, Kira's daughter and she told me that the silver gown of Grand Duchess Marie was destroyed. The new one was clearly inspired by Kira's grandmother's bridal gown but with modern fabrics most likely. The silver in her grandmother's gown would have been very tarnished and impossible to restore and the silk may have rotted.
The news story goes on to say that "the trousseau of 17 dresses includes three models which have been specially designed for Grand Duchess Kira by Schiaparelli. One an evening dress made of pale blue chiffon striped with silver, has a full skirt and open neck-line, another white and silver brocade evening dress is heavily embroidered to pick out the design, while a court gown of gold lame has a deeply cut necklace gathered on to a thick cord."
The Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin had always been very sympathetic to Grand Duke Kirill and regarded him as head of the family, and because of the latter's straitened finances, he made a generous financial contribution towards the wedding costs. Perhaps some of it went towards Kira's trousseau.
