Princess Eugenie also wore a sparkling hair slide belonging to Her Majesty The Queen the Wheat-Ear Brooches.
Princess Eugenie are pictured at Royal Lodge, Windsor ahead of the private evening dinner, following their Wedding. She is wearing another historic jewel from the Queens vault, the Queen Victoria's Ears of Wheat Brooches/Hair ornaments.
King William IV commissioned a set of six diamond ears of wheat to be used as brooches or hair ornaments in 1830 for Queen Adelaide, using 580 diamonds from King George III`s collection, they were among the heirloom jewels handed over by Queen Adelaide to Queen Victoria in 1837. Due to the King of Hanover`s successful claim against QV for Queen Charlotte`s jewels, three of these had to be remade in 1858.
The first ornaments are made by Rundell, Bridge & Co 1831 - the second - these items right curving, above, are from Garrard &Co 1858.
All six brooches were designated by Queen Victoria as heirlooms of the crown in 1858 and in the year 1896. These wheat ear brooches/hair ornaments eventually passed to Queen Elizabeth II in 1952, from her grandmother Queen Mary.
The Queen has worn them as hair slides in the past, in more recent years, although rarely, as a pair of brooches - as during a state visit to Oman in 2010 – where she chose to pin two of the pretty leaf-like designs to her lemon yellow outfit. Having only worn them on two other public occasions, they are clearly special to Her Majesty and so even more significant to her granddaughter Eugenie.
These three pairs of diamond wheat ears are naturalistically modelled as wheat ears, set with brilliants in silver and gold. The wheatears are sized between 8,7-9,5cm x 1,9-2,2cm.
Princess Eugenie's evening dress was designed by Zac Posen. Mr Posen was inspired by the beauty of Windsor and the surrounding countryside. The choice of colour reflects the blush of an English rose. Mr Posen took his inspiration from the White Rose of York.
The pin-tucked plissé is cut on the bias and mixed with signature drapes. The White Rose of York is subtlety embroidered on both the shoulder and back which hold together the cape. The silk for the gown comes from Biddle Sawyer Silk.
Princess Eugenie is wearing diamond and emerald drop earrings which were a Wedding gift from the Groom.
Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester, left her niece Augusta, Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, ten diamond wheat-ears in 1857.
Princess Mary Adelaide, the Grand Duchess Sister, was given 12 wheatears by her mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, on her marriage to the Duke of Teck in 1866.
The princess had these mounted as a wheat-ear-tiara and she was painted wearing this in 1882.
When her son, Prince Alexander of Teck married, she gave The diamond ears of wheat, to his bride Princess Alice Countess of Athlone>>
Queen Mary inherited three more wheat-ear brooches from her mother, the Duchess of Teck, which she subsequently gave away.
