Sapphire and Diamond Engagement Ring Gifts & Presents| Duchess of York | Jewels of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother
Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyons engagement ring was a magnificent blue kashmir sapphire flanked by two diamonds in an exquisite claw setting of platinum. “I haven’t got it yet, but it is being made for me. But I will let you so far into the secret as to say it will be composed of sapphires and diamonds. I’m very fond of blue, and that’s why I’ve chosen sapphires. Indeed, blue is my favorite color.” Lady Elizabeth told a reporter, in an interview the day after the official announcement.
...The Duke of York has presented his betrothed with a diamond and sapphire engagement ring, and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon will thus be wearing the emblem when she goes to-day to Sandringham for the family gathering, at which it is expected the general arrangements for the wedding will be discussed. In view of the fact that there has been so much speculation about the ring, and the intention of the engaged couple to go together to make the selection, it may be of interest to state exactly what happened in regard to the matter. The Duke and Lady Elizabeth did not go to any jeweller for the selection. On Tuesday last the Duke requested Mr. Bert, jeweller, of 3, Vigo Street, to send to him at Buckingham Palace a selection of sapphire rings. The rings were taken and left till Wednesday afternoon, when Mr. Bert called and saw the Duke and Lady Elizabeth together. They had mutually approved and selected a ring set with three stones, a sapphire in the centre and a diamond on either side. The centre stone is considerably larger than the others, and is a gem of great beauty. The jeweller declared emphatically that lie had never seen a more beautiful blue. The sapphire came from Kashmir. The ring is what is sometimes called a half hoop, hut among experts, that term is not usually applied unless the setting reaches half way round the hoop. When the ring had been chosen, it was found that owing to the smallness of Lady Elizabeth's finger, the ring did not fit. The jeweller took it away to alter it, but finding that the reduction in size would mar' the effect of the setting, he got leave to reset the stones. The ring was required for presentation yesterday, and by dint of late working it was completed in time for delivery at noon,- when Mr. Bert personally handed it to the Duke. His Royal Highness was delighted with it and his delight was ' shared by Lady Elizabeth, when her fiancé placed in upon her finger during the afternoon. The three stones are in an exceedingly light platinum setting, so light that when it is in wear practically nothing is seen beyond the three gems. The rich blue of the sapphire Predominating, the flanking brilliants of great lustre emphasising the effect of the principal stone.
Queen Mary presented her a sunburst diamond brooch pendant , the stones being set in the form of a rising sun, as an engagement gift - clearly to see above in the picture, worne from Lady Elizabeth.
Nothing was known of the whereabouts till the year 2015. On an event in October, Anne Princess Royal wore the jewel of her grandmother, the diamond sunrise pendant as brooch.
The Welsh Gold nugget for the marriage ring of the Duke of York and Lady Elizabeth, in 1923 comes from Clogan St. David's gold mine in Bontddu, a tiny village in the north Wales county of Gwynedd.
