VEVER | Maison Vever Paris
Maison Vever, an eminent representative of the Renaissance Revival, stands out as a foremost figure in French Art Nouveau jewelry production, second only to René Lalique. Esteemed for its exquisite enameled creations and gem-set ornaments, Maison Vever has left a lasting mark on the industry. Henri Vever, a luminary in the field, penned the seminal work on the history of 19th-century French jewelry, contributing profoundly to the academic and artistic realms.

The roots of this leading Parisian jewelry house trace back to Metz, where it was established in 1821. The founder’s son, Ernest Vever, after apprenticeships in Hanau and Vienna, joined the family enterprise in 1848. The company initially garnered attention in 1861 with its historicist pieces, drawing inspiration from Gothic and Byzantine styles. The Vever family relocated to Paris in 1871, further solidifying their reputation within the luxurious milieu of the capital. Ernest engaged actively in civic and industry affairs, serving as president of the Jewelers and Goldsmiths Association from 1875 to 1881.

Henri Vever and his brother Paul took up the mantle in 1874, becoming partners in the enterprise. Their participation in the 1878 Paris World Exhibition showcased their skill, presenting jeweled floral bouquets, classic parures with emeralds and diamonds, and Greek-style necklaces. The exhibition also featured the acclaimed Assyrian gold necklace, a masterpiece of intricate design.

Under their guidance, Maison Vever achieved international acclaim, notably receiving the Grand Prix at the 1889 World Exhibition for a stunning parure and a tiara reminiscent of sunrays. The house’s signature motifs often included floral and leaf designs, and Vever’s innovative enamel techniques were widely recognized for their sophistication.

By 1891, the company was exhibiting legendary parures in Moscow, and around the turn of the century, it embraced the Art Nouveau movement with designs in opal, ivory, tortoiseshell, and enamel, prominently featured at the Paris World’s Fair. Eugene Grasset, joining as a designer, introduced motifs of poetic delicacy, including nymphs and mythical female figures. Among these, the “Sylvia” pendant, depicting a woman with butterfly-like wings, garnered widespread admiration.

Transitioning through eras, from 1907 onwards, Vever incorporated platinum into its creations, adopting the emerging Art Deco style with its geometric patterns. Following Paul Vever’s death in 1915, the company was handed over to Henri’s nephews, André and Pierre, in 1921. Despite their efforts, they could not sustain the esteemed status of Maison Vever. Henri, an avid art collector and internationally recognized scholar, passed away in 1942. The leadership eventually passed to Jean Vever, a grandson of Paul, in 1962, until the company’s closure in 1982. Maison Vever remains a symbol of French elegance and historical significance in the world of fine jewelry.
