Dem „Temps“ wird aus Petersburg über die Reisepläne des Kaisers Nikolaus berichtet: Am 14. oder 15. September 1903 gedenkt der Zar, der gegenwärtig jagt, nach Darmstadt zu dem gewohnten Aufenthalte bei den Verwandten der Kaiserin zu fahren. Diesmal gibt es für seine Anwesenheit in Darmstadt noch einen besonderen Grund: Die bevorstehende Vermählung des Prinzen AndreasvonGriechenland, des jüngsten Sohnes des Königs Georg, mit einer Prinzessin von Battenberg. Gegen Ende des Monats, wahrscheinlich am 24., begiebt der Zar sich in die Steiermark, um mit dem Kaiser von Oesterreich zu jagen. Doch begleitet Graf Lemsdorff seinen Gebieter dorthin, woraus man schliessen darf, dass die beiden Kaiser sich nicht blos dem Jagdvergnügen widmen, sondern sich ernstlich mit den orientalischen Angelegenheiten beschäftigen werden. Nach dem Aufenthalt in Oesterreich wird der Zar nach Darmstadt zurückkehren und bis Ende October, 1903 bis zur Reise nach Italien (-wurde später abgesagt-), dort bleiben. Während der Anwesenheit des Zarenpaares findet die Einweihung der auf der Mathildenhöhe erbauten Russischen Kapelle statt, in welcher am 7. October Prinz Andreas von Griechenland und die Prinzessin Alice von Battenberg den Bund für das Leben schließen werden. Die Trauung findet, wie wir bereits meldeten, auch nach protestantischen Ritus statt.
Ein sehr grosszügiges Geschenk brachte der Zar zur Hochzeit mit. Prinzessin Alice erhielt ein wahrlich imperiales Hochzeitsgeschenk von Ihrer Tante Alexandra, der Schwester Ihrer Mutter Victoria – der Tsarin von Russland und deren Mann, dem Zar. This was complemented by a matching necklace and sizable diamond earrings in 1914. But only four months before the wedding, her mother, Mary Ethel, Viscountess Harcourt, commissioned a magnificent diamond bandeau tiara from Boucheron in London.
Made in platinum and set with old brilliant, old single and rose-cut diamonds, the jewel centres on a pear-shaped diamond of 3.60 carats. Its scrolls, quatrefoils and stylised olive or laurel leaves form a refined classical wreath design, with the remaining diamonds weighing approximately 85 carats. Olive symbolizing peace, prosperity, and fertility.
The tiara descended from Viscountess Harcourt to Doris, later Baroness Ashburton, and remained in the family by descent — one of the great jewels of the Harcourt collection.

The grandfather’s legacy!
In 1856 the crown jeweler Bapst created a comb for Empress Eugenie using diamonds from the French crown jewels. The head ornament had nine long diamond pendants called pampilles or aiquillettes.
At the auction of the French crown jewels in 1887, Tiffany’s bought four pampilles and sold two of them to Junius Spencer Morgan, the wealthy patriarch of the renowned merchant banking family.
He put these 2 pampilles in the safe with this order:

The contents of this box „2 diamond pendants from the Crown Jewels of France“ as described in the papers which accompany them are the property of my daughter Mary Ethel Burns.
They were handed to me by her Grandfather on the 29th June 20/88 to be held in Trust for her.

It was an exquisite and amazing present to his granddaughter May Burns.
She remounted the pampilles and the twenty-eight diamonds into a fringe necklace. It is said that the old-mine cut diamonds are I to J in colour, SI to I1 clarity in lively brilliance.

The historic Dowager Viscountess Harcourt Diamond Necklace went to Tiffany & Co., on auction in October 2015, who first purchased the 28 diamonds on the necklace at the 1887 French Crown Jewels auction in Paris. US$1,548,718 / CHF 1,505,959 Source:Sotheby’s;

Gowns from the trousseau which Lady Alice Scott has chosen for her marriage are described. A soft pastel dinner gown in pale amethyst velvet and dull tuquoise blue was seen. The amethyst velvet is softly shirred at the neck and the long sleeves are bordered with wide bands of soft grey fox.
